Kinja'd!!!

Edit September 25: We’re about to pick dates for the multi-day Wales meet in Spring 2018. Anyone who wants in on the discussion, now is the time. 24 people filled in the questionnaire, including 3 Americans. Signing up for the actual meet has no deadline.

Old post:

After the last post a few weeks ago lots of votes were cast. Some discussions were had. Result: 2 meets in Europe in 2018. One a (long) weekend, the other a week. But where and when? That’s where the questionnaire comes in. edit: 23 entries so far!

First let me show the results of the previous polls. I’ll exclude the polls which asked where and when you would not want to go as they supported the positive polls and thus are superfluous.

In the whatsapp group there have been many mentioning wanting to go to Wales and to Le Mans Classic (Western France, July 6-8 2018). The period around Easter (late March, early April) is mentioned often as well. This corresponds with the polls. The other locations in the poll, save for the Nürburgring, haven’t been mentioned all that often at all.

As it looks now, and nothing has been decided just yet, these two trips will happen:

A week long ‘holiday’ type of trip. Maybe from a Sunday to a Saturday (or mon-fri) to give people time to travel. Given the polls and the replies in whatsapp some time around Easter 2018 seems the most logical. In, most likely, Wales (UK).

A (long) weekend, so Friday-Sunday or similar, in another month. Most likely in summer 2018. Most popular seem to be Le Mans Classic in France (6-8 July 2018, a report about the 2017 edition ) or close to the Nürburgring in Germany (flexible dates). edit : I received a suggestion for Classic Days at Schloss Dyck (near Düsseldorf, Germany. www.classic-days.de ) as well.

Both trips should include driving lots of interesting local roads, enjoying the local cuisine (including the liquid variety) and some sightseeing. And hopefully not losing all coolant, again. Given the prevalence of low budget attendees base costs should be kept low.

Please only fill in the questionnaire if you’re at the very least considering coming to one of the meets. You obviously don’t have to be sure right now.

edit: When you fill in the questionnaire, please finish by clicking “Finish Survey” . This will send me the results. The last two questions are optional. I’ve received unfinished results, which don’t show up in the summary.

Oh wow I haven’t been keeping up with Oppo much for the last year.. This seems like a really cool thing, I will definitely join if the dates check out.

Yes please, do you still have my number from the TTB group?

also, I might be coming to your side of the country (Friesland actually) in the coming weeks. I know we once mentioned reviewing eachothers cars, so if you are still interested and want to drive the Celica, I will be sort of in the neighbourhood.

I sadly don’t have your number any more. 06, and then?

And about your entry in the questionnaire; we can have all the meets we want, all we need are people who take the initiative in planning such a thing ;)

Definitely. If the Wales thing is on I’ll take the week off but probably join the main group for 3/4 of those days, and take the rest with my girlfriend in the Welsh countryside somewhere. The benefit of it being so close to us (relatively) is that you can just drop in and drop out if you wish. So come! Even if it’s just for a day.

I will do my utmost best to pop along to it if it’s in Wales, shame it’s so early in the year otherwise we could have camped at Shell Island!

Shell Island opens mid-March and the trip is planned for end of March or start of April. Strong possibility we could end up camping there, although with the amount of people coming we’d most likely be sleeping in the cars..

Yeah but it can be pretty nasty there in the summer, March would be interesting, but I’d be up for it, I love the place and camping!

It’s good as well because they allow large groups of men and they aren’t too strict about noise etc, thought the facilities aren’t amazing but fine for a night or 2, I’ve got plenty of camping gear including a big Colemans event shelter.

My number is 06-42066054

I will be around the northern parts of NL this coming sunday and monday.

I don’t know how many Dutch Oppo users there are currently, all I know of are the people that were at the last meet. So if the Dutch userbase has grown since then, it would make it easier to organise meets.

I don’t think the Dutch userbase has grown. It probably shrunk compared to the Louwman meet. But there are other Europeans. For example, mister Multiplaorgasms, who just bought a Nissan Maxima, isn’t overly far from Friesland. (Around Oldenburg if I’m not mistaken). I’ve moved to München though, although most of my stuff (+GTi) is still in the north.

You are obviously more than welcome to join us at any of the meets. We went to the Nürburgring with 19 oppositelock readers last March, and drove it. Spa too. And the Austrian/Italian/Swiss Alps last June (with 7 people). Next year one of the meets will likely be in Wales, but the other one is still to be decided though. The Nürburgring and the surrounding area is a plausible destination. Wherever we go, it might be an interesting thing to write an article about ;)

17 people have filled in the questionnaire at this moment, and I know of many who are interested (we’ve got a well populated WhatsApp group) but haven’t filled it in just yet.

Come on Stef join us! Can’t you get Patrick to pay for it or arrange some car to review? I’m sure meeting up with a bunch of Europeans to drive around in Europe makes for a great Jalopnik story.

Certainly would be cheap to fly into the UK. Should be interesting to drive on the wrong side of the road and shift with my left hand. Was kinda hoping that would be in the summer time with the other one being in the Spring. But I’ll definitely try to make it to one of these. My girlfriend really wants to go back to Europe next year so I could certainly spare some days for this.

Will keep you updated. I think many of us European continentals have never driven a RHD car before either, I sure haven’t nor have I ever driven on the wrong left side of the road. I’ll probably fly in and rent/buy as I won’t be driving my own car there when a two way trip to for example Birmingham would be 2700 km / 1650 miles of mostly boring highways plus an expensive two-way trip over the Channel. Flying is way cheaper and faster.

You might find the third result here interesting as well (a result from the questionnaire):

Kinja'd!!!

I know of many in our whatsapp group who’ve shown interest who haven’t filled in the form, so the turnout might even eclipse our last Nürburgring meet (19 people).

As I am moving to Germany, I’ll probably be more able to attend now. By that time I’ll probably have a job and a car there too.

The best thing would (of course!) be to go to Scandinavia. Maybe next time.

March ‘18 should work. Not too sure about Wales due to a limited budget (still saving for that one perfect e46).

It’s either a perfect e46 in a boring commute or an almost perfect e46 you can take on an awesome trip. Your decision ;)

It’s honestly not a particularly difficult journey (just a little dull) and the cost of getting across the channel is about €40 each way, outside of the summer.
