Alright all you sexy MF’ers (Yes, I have been watching Salomondrin, how did you know?), I found out I need a suit soon. Where do all the dude oppos buy their suits from?

I’m looking at Express suits but I’m trying to find something a little better quality since I will need this suit to last and actually look like I’m a put together and professional adult. I’ve also looked at Ted Baker and Bonobos but I’m curious if there are other options out there? Hugo Boss and Nordstrom would be okay but I do have a budget of about 700 for a jacket and pants. Plus I’m not sure how long the tailoring takes (I need it by next Thursday).

Dream M3 for your time.

Suitsupply & Indochino offer better value than Hugo Boss or most of the big names in department stores.

I have this one: http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/suits/napoli-navy-plain/P2778MI.html and it looks fantastic.

If you’re not wanting a super trendy cut (i.e. you want classic/traditional), jos a bank is pretty good. made to measure, you should be able to get out the door for $700 with a traveller I think. (I wear suits a few times a week for work so typically I go in for the 5 for 3 deals every few years). MTM is going to look worlds better than off the rack 95% of the time. Fit is 10x more important than style, material, etc.

Get the best and cry once.

Spend the extra money now on something of high quality and properly tailored. I went through half a dozen crumby ill fitted suits. One of which was from express that came undone at the seems after two wears.

Get a really good one, and take proper care of it. It will last you for a good long time.

Also if you’re getting advice from the guy at the store (or girl - men’s warehouse is the only place I have noticed a lot of women working the men’s suit section though), keep in mind their age and how they are dressed when listening to their recommendations. I say that because half the guys at Josabank look like they are 70 years old, so yeah...

Not really a suggestion:

I once got a Macy’s gift card right shortly before I had to attend a wedding, so went there to get a suit.

3 years and 30 lbs later, they still sold matching pants in a larger size.

I also had a suit from Mens Wearhouse, but I guess their supplies rotate their fabrics every season to prevent this sort of thing. Hrmph.

Hugo Boss, weirdly enough, has one of the best fitting suits I’ve seen, the last one I bough from them needed almost no tailoring (just the pants) and they got it done the next day.

Wall of text because I have had a few drinks...

Don’t confuse baggy with a well fitted traditional suit. Suit should never be baggy (I guess in the 80s it was ok haha). Classic/traditional as in the opposite of modern is an easier way for me to define it. Modern being a lot skinnier, more risky with fashion choices, things like that. Traditional being something that if you walked into a law firm or management consulting firm, no one would bat an eye. Stealing an example from mad men if you have seen it, and our office too. A lot of the guys in the show will do the gray suits with white shirt, very traditional. Pete (I think that is his name - talking first season) has the petroleum blue suits. The sales guy at my office rocks those with paisley ties and stuff like that - works great because he is 31, but if you saw a 50 year old guy wearing it you would do a double take. I’m about that same age but come across to most customers like I am a 50 year old guy (long story, hah) so I usually do dark/medium grays with more conservative shirts (no loud colors). Works well since I work with a lot of lawyers and accountants.

Fuck should have just googled it right away. Best link I found was a coincidence: https://www.josbank.com/suit-fit-guide Look at the guy on the far left vs the guy on the far right (note not just the cut, but the color of the suits, and even the tie, or lack of). And actually now that I am looking, I go for the tailored look. Again, nothing right/wrong about any of them, just be aware jos a bank is going to be more to the traditional side

If you can find a suit that basically fits with the shoulder measurement (e.g 38 or 44) and the S/R/L lengths then you should only need the jacket sleeves, pant legs, and maybe pants waist altered. Even if the jacket sleeves and pants waist fit, usually the pants come unfinished for higher end suits. Usually these basic adjustments can be rushed for a 1-2 day turnaround in my experience, but I guess that’s still cutting it close in your case.

I have several Hugo Boss suits which are pretty good. They’ve all lasted me several years and still look sharp. I usually buy them for like $700 at Nordstrom or like $450-$500 at Nordstrom rack. I’m lucky where if I get the right size (usually 40L or 42L in my case) for a slim fit Boss suit the only tailoring needed is finishing the legs of the pants; jacket sleeves and pants waist fit ‘out of the box’.

If you can get the right size then the only changes needed should be the suit jacket arms and the pants legs.

Ted Baker is also good. I have a suit from there I bought with just altering the jacket sleeves and pants legs. Some of their brighter colored suits aren’t as versatile so you might look a little strange wearing them to an evening event but if you’re just getting black or dark navy you don’t have to worry about it. Mine is from one of their “active” lines or something and its super comfortable and breathable which is nice.

For something cheap, the slim fit suit separates from Calvin Klein or Tommy Hilfiger you can get at any Nordstrom or Macy’s aren’t terrible. They’re usually cheaper (a whole suit for under $400). Separates also have the advantage where you can easily get a different size for the jacket and pants. If you’re not wearing it every day those might last you a while too, but check for the quality of the stitching and cloth before buying.

I’m seeing a trend with Hugo Boss being recommended. I like the idea of having a suit that’s higher quality that I can have when I need it. I’m a little wary of Tommy Hilfiger since their clothes tend to be more relaxed fit and the legs make me look like I couldn’t find the appropriate size.

I’m so glad I live on the west coast where the average crap I wear is considered dressing up...

If I really needed a suit, I have a guy I’d go to (because he’s weird as hell, obsessed with this stuff, reminds me of my dad, and turned around a train wreck) - the dude that runs the place that did the tuxedos for my wedding.

In most places, the easy option is one of the small lower-priced menswear chain stores like Men’s Wearhouse or Jos A. Banks (depending on the region), which carry a wide selection. I buy dress shirts, some pants, and ties from MW; they’re presentable quality and current, which is all I care about. They were a total clusterfuck when it came to tuxedo rentals, but if all you’re doing is buying, it should be no problem.

They also seem to have a sale on blue suits (online at least).

Ahh, okay. That takes some weight off the necessity of ultra high quality/durability. The only people I know that wear suits daily (or at least regularly) work in law, as chauffeurs, or on the east coast... On the west coast, wearing a shirt with a collar is enough to impress people (especially in my profession).
