I recommended a Nissan Juke to my nephew who is 2 years younger than me

Kinja'd!!!

Thanks to the wonders of marrying my wife who’s a little older than me but the youngest of all her siblings, I have a nephew who is 2 years younger than me. He lives in Salt Lake City, and is car shopping. He wants a Subaru, but I found myself recommending a Juke to him for totally legit reasons.

His criteria are pretty simple. He wants something relatively reliable, within a $12k budget, with a 2-box (i.e. wagon/hatchback/CUV) body, and awd for winters. Running on regular fuel and cheap to insure are also good. Generally prefers Japanese brands but maybe could be talked into a Hyundai/Kia.

He really wants to get a Subaru, but I recommended he get a 2011 or newer in order to avoid some of the more common headgasket issues. But with his $12k budget, the only 2011+ Subarus we were finding were at or above 100k miles. Which isn’t completely terrible, but I tried searching around for other ideas that could maybe fit within his budget with less miles on them.

First stop was to search the Carmax in SLC for anything awd, and what came up? A Juke. My nephew is the sort of funky type of person who could maybe like the Juke’s idiotic styling, and the turbo motor could help with the altitude in SLC. On the downside, it runs on premium and the back seat is small. But it seemed like something that would totally suit him.

I did some more searching, and it looks like potentially his other options are the Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, or Kia Sportage. They probably make a lot more sense than the Juke, but they’re also boring.

I’m going to see him this weekend while he’s home in Wisconsin visiting his parents, so we’ll see if he actually goes for the Juke.

I should probably get him to buy a Sportage.

Totally legit reasons, like you want him to be a virgin for the rest of his life?

Is the Sportage anything like a Tucson? I just rode in a 2016 Tucson and it was the worst riding CUV I’ve ever been in.

WTF? Who are you, and what have you done with Atlas?

Srsly, the Sportage is probably a better choice unless he’s really in love with the Juke styling.

In his case, a Juke would not noticeable increase his quirkiness quotient. He’ll be fine.

Same platform, not sure about suspension calibration. I had an uber ride in the back of a new Tucson a couple months ago and thought it was pretty nice...

I recommend the Mini Countryman.

The Juke is a great car I would totally have one, I might be wrong but the awd comes only with the CVT? I guess that takes a bit of the soul out of it, but i’d still take one over a Hyundai or Kia.

So basically like a Juke in that it has a small back seat and runs on premium, but doesn’t fit in his budget and will break more.

He doesn’t drive stick anyway.

Cheap to insure yes, runs on regular fuel no. It can run on 87, but goes better on 91.

On rough roads it’s terrible.

Yes I know.

On the downside, it runs on premium and the back seat is small.

Honestly I would get a pre 2011 Subaru so you don’t get an oil burner. An Impreza or forester would be my choice as the smaller cars are stressing the 2.5 less than a heavier outback.

You mean post 2011?

The back seat is not as bad as most make it to be.

No, pre 2011, they introduced the oil burner in the forester in 2011, then the Impreza/crosstrek and finally the outback in 2012. After the mid 2000's the 2.5 was pretty solid for head gasket issues.

And here I thought the change to that motor was supposed to be the head gasket fix.

Are Nissan CVT’s still heinously unreliable?

Not sure, but they’re definitely annoying on their lower power cars.

I didn’t realize these were holding their value so well. 19k for a 2013 stripper model with 47k mi is a bit crazy.

Still going to offer counterpoints. I believe the non S models take regular. Back seat space is fine, I did 2 hours in the back of one with no real complaints. It reminded my of the 2003 Impreza Wagon I grew up with (less trunk space than the Impreza though). As for reliability it’s all the N14 engine’s fault. Ask anyone who hated their Mini because it was unreliable and I guarantee they will tell you they owned a 07-10 S model. Those engines were horrible and deserve the reputation they have. The other models are solidly average reliability wise. They aren’t Toyotas but they aren’t the constantly in the shop nightmares the internet thinks they are.

http://www.nissanproblems.com/trends/cvt/

According to that website the Juke is not one of them, it seems that the problems were mostly on the first generation CVT, then they introduced an updated one and now they have the D-step with the fake shift points.

My last 4 vehicle have been BMWs and Jeeps. I’m willing to put up with maintaining a vehicle that needs it. But when I recommend cars to non-car people I try to steer them away from anything that runs on premium or has above average maintenance costs.

I guess my experiences lead me to kind of ignore average maintenance costs when looking at used cars. Probably comes from how my 2006 Corolla (newest and supposedly most reliable car I have owned) having a bunch of issues over the 10 months I owned it.
