Is this a problem?

Kinja'd!!!

Not the dirt, just that I seem to be using just the outer edge of the clutch pedal.

Why would that be a problem. Every car I had with 3 pedals was like that. It’s only the rubber cover that is used.

It could lead to uneven clutch wear as the uneven force on the pedal results in the left side of the clutch engaging first

As long as your foot isn’t actually slipping off, I don’t see why it’s an issue. Looks like you’re using the right side of the brake pedal, as well—

That’s more an indication of how you slide your foot onto the pedal than how you apply it. Pretty normal.

Too much toe-out. Get an alignment.

Mine looks the exact same way. Clutch - no problem. Brake? Might want to adjust!

I didn’t even notice that. On a related note, I tend to wear my shoes out on the outside edge as well. I guess I need an alignment...

The thing is, that clutch pedal pad has a lot of wear across the whole face, so I don’t think you’re doing it all the time.

I’ve got a 3 pedal car that I’ve had a long time (since new), too - and I know the clutch pedal pad has uneven wear also.

I only had a problem when it rained and my shoes were wet they would slip off the pedal.

I think it’s not from pressing the pedal but sliding your foot on and off of it. So maybe make sure to lift you foot off the pedal all the way before you move it over to the left?

Do you have a wide stance?

Looks like your heel placing of your left foot is more towards the footrest than the clutch so you may be having to use more force than is necessary as your pushing the pedal slighty over while trying to push it down, rather than if your heel was placed further over to the right.

I try to be quick on and off the clutch in an effort to minimize wear on the throwout bearing and clutch surface, even though this doesn’t exactly result in a silky smooth ride; my BIL was very smooth on the clutch in his TT and almost got to 40K miles before it needed replacement; somehow he talked them into doing it under warranty even though it was 100% his fault. My thought is that any time that the clutch is not fully engaged or disengaged you’re causing wear, and when it’s fully disengaged you’re wearing the throwout bearing.

The 525i went 231,000 miles before a co-worker destroyed the clutch (5th to 1st downshift instead of 5th to 3rd), and the 320i was around 325K when I blew the engine through my own stupidity and lack of maintenance (didn’t flush the coolant for several years - oops). On that one I figured that I might as well replace that clutch whilst I had the engine out since it was never going to be any cheaper than it would be at that point.

One thing I do notice is that when the floormat slides forward I tend to have to put a little more effort on the clutch to ensure that it’s fully disengaged. I really need to spend the money to get some proper winter mats form-fitted to the car instead of using those cheap universal ones like I have in there now. I’ll probably spring for a set of WeatherTech mats once the car is paid off in less than two months - only $560 to go and it’s all mine!!!

Driving shoes could have prevented that issue now your only choice is to use driving shoes or by a new car

Those universal mats are a false economy. Invariably I can find genuine OEM mats on eBay for half the dealership price.

Exactly. In my family we always had manual transmissions, and it was my sister that convinced her husband to buy a few manual-equipped cars. But now that they’re rich they lease various Infiniti and Mercedes vehicles, and the desire for manual transmissions has been tossed aside as they get fancier cars with more toys.

I, however, remain a purist, and drive cheaper cars (and cheaper versions of cheap cars), even though I can afford more impressive ones, in order to continue to have a manual transmission. I guess I’m just a dinosaur...

Meh. The rubber pad fell off the clutch pedal in my Saturn about 5 years ago due to wear like this. I’ve now worn the paint below the pad and its nice shiny metal. The only time it’s a problem is when I’ve got some snow on the bottom of my shoe.
