Cold air intakes: Worthwhile on a NA MR2?

In my quest to make my Camry engine sound better , I’m wondering if a “CAI” will improve the induction sound and/or performance. What’s the effort level to install one? Any Oppos have experience with these?

You should just get a hole saw, cut a hole in that hood and put a bigass snorkel/roof scoop on it.

Please just no. These all just let in bigger particulates.

If you really want your MR2 to sound better (and since this is your second post about it today I’m guessing you do) your best money is going to be spent on the exhaust side.

They tend to be hot air intakes because they just suck up air in the engine bay. They easy to install but kinda pointless. Some have benefits but they have panels to keep it from pulling engine bay air and can be expensive. Other cars make the best power with the stock system, for example the 1uz makes less power with a cai. But if you open up the front of the intake a little(before the filter) and add some plastic at key points it will gain power.(known as the bfi mod) cai’s have different results for each car but they are usually negative

This is more a generic cold air intake question, but what if one would leave the original air intake stock or almost stock but would isolate the tubing profoundly, so engine heat would have far less influence on intake air temperature? As in, cover the air intake tubing with high end (non flammable) isolation foam.

Does the engine use a MAF sensor?

If no you can go nuts.

Yes, it will sound great

Wwill you gain power? probably not, but I don’t know anything about the stock set up. Some stuff from that era was realllllly bad.

CAI’s have to be about the worst return on your money performance parts you can find. If you are lucky all you’ll end up doing is changing the intake noise of your car. If you are unlucky you’ll lose power. If you are really unlucky(and a bit dumb) you’ll do what the son of my father’s coworker did and install a CAI that pulls air from somewhere low then hydrolock the engine because you drove through a puddle.

I know of only one CAI that actually increased HP for my car(an e46). It was made by BMW themselves and it’s something like a 3hp gain. Your money is better spent doing literally anything else that isn’t illegal drugs.

The NA MK2 MR2 has a really nice exhaust note stock. The turbo ones are a lot quieter.

I recommend spending money elsewhere. Get yourself a set of Kirkosaurus motor mount inserts, shifter cable bushings, and a 93+ shifter if you haven’t already. You’ll thank me later when you realize how much more responsive and crisp your car feels.

on an N/ A you will just lose power. It’s not worth it, the stock filter setup has a very good flow rating that no aftermarket one beats.

I would imagine you would get better access to “cold” air from outside the engine bay with the stock setup. Everything I’ve seen and done tells me the OEM does the best job ducting air from outside the engine bay to the intake.

Your money would be better spent finding modifications to the factory intake tract that reduce other bottlenecks.

On my car, this baffle necks down the intake. The hose goes around the larger outside diameter. You can just pull it out and get ALL the benefit of a CAI and still get to use the factory ducting that routes air from in front of the radiator. Much better solution than any CAI on the market.

Here is is once you pull it out.:

This intake is also directly above the brake duct, and there is a factory part that ports air from the brake duct UP into the bottom of the intake tube that connects to this airbox.

Ah, found it.

I’d do a little more research and see what you can do along these lines.

It depends on how you need the power and how you use the car. Once you go WOT you’ll clear out the intake tract pretty quickly, so insulation only helps in those first few seconds. Even insulation will heat soak if you sit around a lot, so it doesn’t really help much.

A hood (or in this case, a rear deck) vent can help keep underhood temps lower, and help with better cooling, but that’s a much more involved thing. And likely more car-specific in both execution and benefit.

I don’t think it will yield anything performance-wise since the 5S is limited by the intake manifold and cams, not the airbox and the air it’s drawing in is already coming from outside of the engine compartment. As far as sound, I don’t know. How hard is it to set up ITBs? I know that some of the 3Ss got them and people make adaptor plates for the 16V 4As, but not really too familiar with the 5S. Being an S block, the 3S ones might work. People have talked about it on the forums before.

5SFE, so money is best spent on throwing away the engine and putting something else there.

If I’m looking at that deep of engine work, I’ll probably just save up for a swap instead. The induction noise would be pretty cool with ITBs though.

I looked at the Kirkosaurus website and will probably order the inserts this week. Any recommendations on where to find the ‘93+ shifter?

Good point. Was thinking it might be a cheap way to get an even better sound, but I’m not going to risk losing performance over that.

Welllll then I’d have to swap in an engine that’d make it go as fast as it would look... Roof scoops are Le Mans level looks.

TwosRUs. And beware - if you’re anything like me, over the years you will spend a medium-sized fortune there. Dave is a great guy though, and he works hard to keep providing stuff to the MR2 community, so I try and promote him whenever I can.
