2007 VW Passat Wagon (base model):

Anyone able to “learn me real good” on what I should expect from a 10 year old German wagon w/110k+ miles?

VIN: WVWXK73C07E073194

Next up a 13 year old Volvo V70 Cross Country with almost 160k miles:

VIN: YV1SZ59H341171940

Also from the same year, a slightly less “rugged” Volvo wagon:

Or if you like to live dangerously (I guess, i’m not that knowledgeable about Swedish cars, except that they are usually very comfortable), a 10 year old V8!!! equipped Volvo:

Okay, now it’s time to get extra dangerous.

Let’s look at some 10+ year old Land Rovers kids.

“YAY!!!”

First up an 05 with 126k miles. Needs a rocker panel on driver side and passenger side mirror (methinks angry ex reactions). Can anyone tell me why this thing looks like it is raised up to the maximum on its’ air suspension?

Listen up Oppos, for I will tell you the tale of a Land Rover LR3 with 214,xxx miles. A pretty clean 06 that is claimed to have passed emissions and that the emissions pass with be included in the sale. It’s like a British Wonka golden ticket.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And lastly a blue 06 with 140k miles with a recent full service (1 year ago, smh, pretty sure that those things need to be serviced once every 12-17k miles or realistically once a year). Also, I’m not really sure what the seller means buy “roof display doesn’t work”. Also, also, pictures were taken suspiciously far away from the car...

Also found, laughably high mileage Land Cruisers and Lexus LX SUVs asking way too much money for the most farted in seats on earth. (not to mention they are all over 15 years old)

Johnson Rods suspension lift possibly? Also, look for an LR3 with complete service records. It’s the only way to minimize the wallet pain.

You follow the steps of every Disco 2 owner I know, they all get Disco 3s and 4s (your LR3 -LR4) or the odd Defender (also much cheaper here).

There is no wrong in that.

As a prior owner of a 2006 LR3 and the current owner of a 2004 Land Cruiser, those prices don’t look terrible. If you’re into LR3s, I would look at the later ones. There are a number of issues on the early ones. Not to mention check to see if the bushings have been replaced, as they like to eat them at 100k or so. The LR4 fixed this apparently. Also make sure the air suspension is good to go (i.e. no sag overnight, pump works). Although if you’re looking around $5k, I would just presume you’ll have issues. I had a fair amount of issues with mine, and yet I still want another. I loved that truck so much.

As for the land cruisers, if you’re under 200k miles, $5k + seems common. Based on ads and what not, I could probably get $10-12k for my 2004 with 170k on it.

Are they HD or MD springs? Normally on the TF there is a bit of sag depending on the weight of your truck so 3" is really 2.5"

I would say no to all of them.

The Passat’s interior is easily affected by sun exposure, especially on the radio buttons. I would worry about turbo failure. Plus it’s a base VE model so you can do better.

Old Volvos are awesome until something breaks. Sure, they tend to run for a long time with regular maintenance. But when one old part that’s been on the car for a decade goes, another will soon follow. Had an ‘96 855T  and the wiring harness suffered major corrosion from being routed underneath the I-5 turbo engine. The ones you listed may have the same issue design-wise. Don’t know enough about the XC90 V8 other than tha Yamaha built V8 sounds amazeballs in a S80.

Land Rovers: no DeMuro Special, no want...unless you’re planning a LS swap.

We had a 2.0T B6 Passat sedan. It was quite reliable, but the intake ports on the head gunked up with carbon. If it surges during acceleration during the test drive, it will need to be cleaned out soon. It should be so smooth pulling through the drivetrain that you don’t even notice the turbo building boost. (Granted, we owned an ‘08 in 2013, so it wasn’t that old for us).

The V70 should be pretty solid, the only issues I know of from that era are the AWD system on the V70R and XC70. (Be sure to double check me on this though).

Stay away from the XC90, everything I’ve read says they have expensive problems.

I actually did the cleanup myself. Got some picks and sprays and brushes, and carved all that carbon out by myself. It was pretty easy (intake was on the front of the engine), but rather time consuming. If I were to do it again, I’d get a sandblaster and walnut shells for media.

It’s a Johnson rod lift. Says it right in the ad. Hopefully they aligned it to that height though otherwise they can drive like shit. On top of that they probably raised the height to max for pictures which would net ~4".

I suggest 07 and newer though. Fixed a lot of issues the earlier ones had. I would flat out avoid 05. Always the most problematic.

I only want to get rid of the DII because of aged plastics and it’s uper difficult to put an infant into the backseats. Which means the wife gets my ST until we move and/or I get her something new to DD.

The way I understand it is to take the intake off, make sure the intake valves are closed, then blast the intake port with walnut shell media. They’re softer than aluminum or steel, so they cannot damage the head or valves, but will still clean off the carbon.

Don’t take out your pent up regret and frustration on me because you refuse to take charge of your life.
