Kinja'd!!!

Good morning everyone! Bask in the blue of my SW21 to brighten your day. If anyone knows where to find the exhaust silencer on a non-Turbo MR2, please let me know in the comments below. I’m really just curious to hear the difference, as it’s 100% induction noise currently.

More gratuitous blueness:

I don’t think there’s a “silencer.”

There’s a muffler transverse behind the rear bumper, and one or two catalytic converters. No resonators that I know of.

Hard to find an n/a exhaust. Won’t really do too much other than make it sound different

Step one is acquiring a sawzall.

Step two is finding your tail pipe. Follow it along until you find a fat bit. That’s the part you want to remove with the sawzall.

This process applies to all cars, although with the more modern ones usually you’ve got a bunch of fat parts. You don’t want to cut out any of the catalytic converters if you care about your check engine light being on. But keep following the exhaust forwards until you find an o2 sensor screwed into it, and stop removing things there.

Maybe silencers are only on Turbo models. Was hoping for a simple piece to un-bolt and get a different sound, but I might be expecting too much of my 27-year-old, base model, vehicle...

That seems to be the struggle for NA MR2s. Everyone does an engine swap because the 5S-FE Camry engine is so uninspired and underwhelming. Yet it’s a solid engine and I’d rather make that sound good than throw in the expensive wildcard of a swap at this early stage of ownership.

Hehehe, I was more hoping to find a part I could easily remove (and also put back when I need quiet) to make the exhaust a little more audible.

The sawzall idea does sound fun though...

My advice would be NO. the resonator mostly changed the pitch rather than noise level, to get rid of the drone/raspy sound.

I’d replace the muffler.

It’s a solid car with the 5S, just enjoy it until you swap it.

There’s probably a bolted connection right at the manifold(s) that could be undone.
