but one thing is bugging me.

Dave Grohl is singing into a Shure SM57, a Shure SM58 (I think) would be much better. The main differnce is the SM57 is Low Impedance, & has no pop filter. Where the SM58 & does. I’ve only ever used SM57's on mic’ing up instruments, never for vocals. It’s do able, but I don’t like it.

How he managed to yell out all those lines is beyond me. And Dave apparently, since he can’t do it in one breath anymore.

Dave Grohl has been making music for almost thirty years now. I think he knows what he’s doing. He’s an actual musician, not some Taylor Swift bullshit artist looking to make a buck.

Mr. Grohl is on drums in this vid.

SM57 vs. SM58 uses will always be hot topic of prefence. They are so similar. I’ve always used SM57 for instruments & percussion, & SM58 for vocal (sometimes instruments).

I’m Shure the video producers took all that into account and really wanted the most authentic experience.

I haven’t like anything he has done post Nirvana. I was just graduating from high school at the time so maybe I’m biased.

BTW my middle school chem teacher thought it was awesome when I told him I listened to Nirvana. Now I teach high school science classes and my students have no idea who any of these guys are. FML.

Question...

I wonder: do artists actually sing/play instruments when recording a music video? I know that in cinema you “act as if singing/playing” and the sound you hear in the film is added later.

Which would mean that on this video the mic is no more than a prop, and not actually being used.

But maybe the video production industry works differently?

Note: Dave Grohl is not actually singing into that microphone..

It’s a video. They sometimes use 57s because they are smaller, and you can see more of the artist’s face. It’s just a prop.

That part was recorded in segments in the studio, and he takes short breaths when she sings it live. We have never heard him do it in one take.

I’m aware it’s a prop, but a SM58 is not much larger & it be more accurate.

If we’re talking accuracy, why isn’t the kit mic’d? And speaking of kits, why is Taylor playing Dave’s drum parts, and why isn’t Pat’s playing muted and messy with those evening gloves?

:)

I agree with you about the mics and the song. I think Monkey Wrench is just about perfect.

I don’t like the Foo Fighters songs.

I would at least understand stopping at anything after The Colour and the Shape, but to deny early Foo is at your own peril.

I heard a <25-year-old new hire at work refer to Nirvana as “Dave Grohl’s other band.”

That’s worth a civil war.
