Kinja'd!!!

So I went to the Subaru dealer today and had no problem test driving this.

Ugg. How was it?

I did not like the clutch, but other than that it was pretty great to drive. Would I trade my M3 for it? No. Would I trade the E92 for it? Probably.

I felt the clutch to be super easy when I drove a used one. It’s so torquey on the very bottom end no gas was needed. My big thing is the ride and road noise. How was that?

It was way lighter than the one in either of my BMWs. Like stupid light. I stalled it once because the clutch bit pretty much immediately and I wasn’t used to that. It was pretty noisy, but I found the seats made up for the ride quality.

My wife is a bit worried about the road noise and how comfortable it is over bumps but we quelled that with the Focus ST

I mean, it’s not a Lexus. The ride in the M3 is rough, but the seats more than make up for it. Road noise is something that wouldn’t bother me too much as I pretty much always listen to music anyways and am in my car alone 99% of the time. Are you leaning toward a FoST?

Sounds like you’ve had really bad luck with Subaru. We started talking about how I needed good gas mileage and it ended with my driving an STi. I drove a FoST, they are pretty great little cars; I get the hype. The downside to having an E90 M3 is that you compare every car to that, and do either of them live up to the E90? Not really. Are they both fantastic cars? Yes. I also might be slightly biased.

I’d strongly recommend holding out for an STI or WRX. I have no dog in the fight, i daily an e92 335i RWD 6mt. The ST twins are fun, but the wrx and STI are another level. The STI is a car i’d love to own, and they hold value very well which is important in a daily driver. The ST twins seem to just constantly drop in value.

The bonus is I can get a loaded FoST for 8-10k under sticker.

How long do you plan on keeping this?

4-5 year more then likely. By then the wife and I should both be making enough to get something nicer. Even then we may just keep it but I have no idea that far in advance.

In that case I’d go subie simply because in 4-5 years, the STI is still gonna be worth $20k+ and will be a better trade in. Also, have you checked out the 335is? They are better than the normal 335i, and I think some can still be found in warranty.. plenty of fun and the reliability is certainly not too bad.

YEah my dad has completely shot down European cars ( he owns a shop that would fix my cars) so I’ve resorted to Subarus and Ford that are new.

I would really try to sway him otherwise. I wrote off the 335i because I thought they were unreliable. Then I did research, and realized that the people who were having problems with them, were tuning them to 450whp without proper supporting mods. Talked to some techs at the dealership, did research on forums, realized they are very simple to work on, and took the plunge. Mine is almost stock, and it’s been great for 30k+ miles. Just crossed 82k and I drive into DC multiple times a week.

I noticed you talking about how your wife is concerned about ride quality. I can run down my friend in his STI, and demolish my friend in his tuned ST on all backroads when we go cruise... and my car is far more comfortable and refined. At the same time, my car makes cool turbo noises and i can kick the back end out relatively easily. I don’t want to keep sounding like a BMW fanboi, but I really think a 335i would totally fit the bill for what you are looking for.

Yeah i bet it’s exactly what I’m looking for which is frustrating. We’re still looking and will be for a while which is nice. We have to buy a house, get another dog, then it’s my turn to get the car.

I recommend at least stopping by and testing out an E9x 335i if you ever have some extra time. Good luck on the house and dog though! I’m sure those will both be very fun, and in the grand scheme of things, are far more important than worrying about a car.
