Controversial statement, all of U R A BUS’s local (UK) lineup is bland even the WRX which is easily bettered in the UK market by the extreme wealth of Hot hatches.
They need to do something because they are being outsold here by ssangyong.

From the sounds of things, the hatch will be returning when the WRX moves to the new global platform that underpins the new Impreza, around 2020.

There has never been a time where the Impreza hatchback went away. They did the same thing with the STi sedan last generation. They were hatch only for the first few years and then the sedan was added with the refresh in 2011.
