Four cylinder engines, by no means, should ever have more than one bank of cylinders.

I catch your drift. Something like the one above requires double the number of cam shafts, longer belts, and seems to have a larger overall volume than an inline four.

agree
But still, I’m surprised VW never made a VR4 narrow-angle V4. It would be tiny and could fit lots of power in small cars. Yeah a VR4 would be expensive to fix, but VW always is

Strongly Disagree, I like my CoG low as possible and it’s easier to get a better sound out of a 4 cyl when there are 2 banks of cylinders

As someone who has a honda logo for their signature, you are completely factually wrong.
Proof: nr750, rc30-45,rc212v, vfr family, magna..... And thats just honda.

Horizontally opposed engines sit lower in the car and are naturally balanced (no need for balance shafts) thus negating the extra weight from the cams.

However, four cylinder engines, with few exceptions, don’t sound very good if there’s only one bank of cylinders.

An exception can be made for rally/race cars.

So your example gets a pass then as it has 3 WRC drivers championships, 3 constructors championships, and 47 rally wins to its name.

You can’t take it racing if it isn’t in the production car.

You’re wrong, I want a needlessly complicated W4 made with three banks of 1.3 cylinders each.

Double the number of camshafts, but half the length. It has a different, but probably not larger, volume of an I4. All you’ve done is cut the engine in half and oppose one new piece against the other.
