Kinja'd!!!

I didn’t necessarily totally want the job, but I was more than qualified for the job and I would have taken a fresh approach to it from the last guy who, incidentally, would have been a tough act to follow.

But they gave the job to someone else. It’s hard not to feel disappointed, discouraged, lew-zer , et cetera. The job I have is good and I think I am now resigned to doing it until it’s time to hang up my spurs. In about sixteen years...

I’m amazed at how early people are trying to retire. Most people are me talk about 55! Wouldn’t that be nice.

Sorry you didn’t get the job.

Same here... Incidentally I did get the job I ‘sorta wanted’ and now I want my old job back. If that helps.

If it makes you feel better, in sixteen years the retirement age will probably 75 so you won’t actually retire

I know that feeling. Security, confidence, comfort. Its pretty awesome that you can run out where you’re at. That doesn’t happen often anymore.

I have twenty six to go and will happily stay where I’m at. Unless they do something stupid.

I went through that stuff last year after the job I had was reduced to part time. Then it was the usual “overqualified” or “you don’t have experience with this one particular thing” over and over and the rejection sucked ass. I finally got a new full time gig and I kept the old one to boot (at even fewer hours) but at my age I’m not sure how long I can work 50+ hours a week. I’ve been doing it for 9 months now and I’m starting to feel it.

What Bird Dog said. I’m 49, and hoping to hang it up in 10 years or so. Regardless of how long that is, it’s great that you have a good gig that you feel like you can run out. I’ve got a good job, but it isn’t going to exist in a year or so, so I’m starting to plot my next move, and I’m not looking forward to it.

I’m past the point where I care about moving up, I just want to do a good job and go home.

And isn’t it funny how we feel disappointed when we’re told “no”, even when we’re unsure of whether we wanted it or not?

Hey man sometimes things like that don’t turn out the way you’d like at first, just gotta keep your eyes up and be ready to attack new opportunities as they show up.

Shit when I was 16 I applied to 3 places, McDonalds, KFC, and a fucking BMW dealership. I interviewed at all 3 and (in order) was told no by McDicks, a solid no from KFC, and “Can you start today” by BMW. Just keep pushing man!

Robs us of the chance to say “No” ourselves. If I needed a job and wasn’t worried about the money, I’d like to work for shipping at Ikea or Amazon, packing packages. Either place, my tech skills would probably give me some promotion potential. But it wouldn’t even be in the ballpark of what I’m earning as a teacher.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
08/05/2017 at 00:51, STARS: 0

Very true. I’d like to do something simpler, too, but yeah, it isn’t going to be in the ballpark of what I’m earning, either. I figure that, after retiring, I’ll find something to keep me occupied part-time, but haven’t thought through what that will be—

How do you find the nurses to work with? I have a friend who became a nurse who says that nurses are the worst people on earth to work with. Of course, my friend is a man and all the nurses are women and my friend has what amounts to Tourette’s Syndrome for saying idiotic, inappropriate, awkward things, but still. I get the sense that they peck each other ‘til they bleed. And I have theories about why that is...

Being second shift my interactions are limited.

“Iget the sense that they peck each other ‘til they bleed”

That isn’t too far off. From what I have seen it’s very clicky. Each floor seems to have three or four groups that don’t get along with each other. They are overworked and under paid out here though. There’s a shortage of new staff that’s so bad the Hospital is offering a $5000 signing bonus.

My theory is that even with the heavy education requirement for qualification, and the pay — Kaiser Permanente Northern California starts new nurses at $60/hr — it’s still an hourly job with all the infighting and backbiting that entails. And it’s union, usually, and whenever there’s a union involved, rare will be the person who behaves like an actual grownup and looks any further than the end of their nose or the bottom number on their pay stub.

$60/hour?

They barely make $20/hour here. Traveling Nurses get $25/hr and a $20 per diem. There’s a COLA difference between Iowa and Cali(?) but damn.

We have our McMansions here. There’s no doubt. I recently passed on a .25 acre plot with a nice ranch house for $29,500. It’s being rehabbed right now and I’m kicking myself for not buying it.

I want a Farm though. So I’m not kicking myself too hard.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, 0.3 acres is a farm. My house was 2Br/1Ba and 880 ft^2. I We bought for $159.5k in 1998 after it had sat on the market for six months at $165k. I’ve We’ve since added another 500 ft^2 and a Br and a Ba and a family room and in the current boom, we could get north of $600k for it. Maybe closer to $700k. But then where would we live? Thankfully, there is Proposition 13 which keeps me from being taxed at $700k...
