So I’m coming from the left on Church Street and turning onto South Park Street (from the above image, I’d be going up South Park). I come to a full stop at the intersection, make sure no cars are coming or people, then proceed to turn. My front wheel is in the crosswalk when all of a sudden a woman SCREAMS at me from the crosswalk, she was no more than 2 steps off the corner. Insert a ton of expletives thrown at me because “I nearly killed her” at my 5mph fury, she punches my trunk or spoiler...and i drive off. I pull up no less than 10 feet down the road to pick someone up and as soon as my passenger gets in my car, the same woman comes running up to my open window and screams “YOU’RE SUPPOSE TO STOP JACKASS” and again punches my car. I could have smelt this womans breath if I turned my head.
Honestly, if I wasn’t with someone, I would’ve confronted her..but I just drove off cause I had places to be. So I have to ask, if you see someone at the curb of a crosswalk and you’re 2 seconds from going through it, do you stop? Are you suppose to? Is it more illegal for my vehicle to be stopped in an intersection than to let someone who’s at the curb cross?

I only stop and will wait if they are crossing the lane I will be crossing. And when I am a pedestrian that is all I expect from drivers. Much more efficient that way.

if shes in the cross walk i think you have to stop. if shes waiting i think you are supposed to stop. if you didn’t see her and she was there you are probably in the wrong.
i would imagine a cop would be more ok with you sitting in an intersection instead of cutting off a pedestrian. if a driver has an issue, they would be waiting for that person too so they can chill.
as a pedestrian, I sometimes would rather have the car go especially if they are blocking traffic, then everyone isn’t watching me and waiting.

In some ways pedestrian laws regarding yielding to someone in a crosswalk are great. Other times I feel like it gives pedestrians a sense of entitlement and the mindset that no matter the speed of the car and the distance from said crosswalk, once they step in it, all cars should stop (whether able or not).
If you stopped, decided traffic was clear and started to move as she entered the cross walk, she should have waited for you to clear or waited until you acknowledged her crossing. I think you are fine here and she just flipped shit for no reason.

As long as you’re going at a respectful speed and know that the pedestrians won’t be within 10 or more feet as you pass without them needing to slow down or stop, I say no harm no foul.
It’s the drivers who obviously didn’t see me or are going too fast to panic stop that worry me most.

It definitely varies by state, but usually the rule is if they’re in the crosswalk, you yield, if they’re on the curb, they do.

First, it sounds like she was looking to pick a fight, second, if she wasn’t in the crosswalk when you began your turn, then you are legal in your right to clear the intersection.
Third, its the pedestrian’s job to make sure its clear, and no to just dart out into the crosswalk hoping people will stop for them. They have the right of way, yes, but its a lot easier for them to stop walking than for you to stop a 3000+ pound vehicle.

In the crosswalk you have to stop. Two steps or not.
Punching your car seems uncalled for though, especially if she had to take a few steps to reach your car.

Well I am in SF most of the time so things are a bit crazy and people expect that and walk around cars etc... So I see worse than that and nobody gets upset at all, we just have to accept it.

No. If there’s clear intent to cross, and I don’t have someone on my ass, I’ll stop... but I’m not holding someone up because you can’t make up your mine what you’re doing. You may technically have the right of way to start crossing, but I have the right of physics... frankly you can react faster than I can. If I’m on my way to turn it’s safer for both parties if the pedestrian just waits 5 seconds. I don’t have to brake hard unexpectedly and they don’t have to do any jumping out of the way.
Basically that’s a long rambling way of saying I want to be predictable and want them to follow suit.

The ones in WA are so entitled that they believe if they’re even in the vicinity of the corner that they are entitled to all cars stopping in all directions.
I saw a couple try to break a car’s window recently when they freaked out at a guy that turned when they were standing there. They were freaking out and yelling at the guy. He was just trying to get out of the freaking intersection after the light turned red, too - they weren’t even supposed to be crossing the street - but they were so entitled and looking to pick a fight.
