Kinja'd!!!

Rebuilt 2016 Club Miata with 3,000 miles. Listed for $18k, about 3k less than any other manual.

Seems like a good deal assuming you get it checked out and the thing is straight. I don’t necessarily like how low it is, and its not a good sign they are selling it so soon. But that doesn’t automatically mean there is something wrong with it.

For me personally, I know I’ll kill the value of anything I drive. See previous vehicles for reference: jumped, broken everything, crashed, too many miles. At the rate I’m going, in 4 years it’ll have 100k miles on it. So I’m not worried about resale value.

Can you get receipts for the accident damage? Based on your usage, this seems like it could be a really good opportunity for you.

Not perfect stance for Detroit, or even winter. Can you raise a car on coilovers right?

Would that just prove what they’re saying was damaged, it true?

I’d want to review to see if perhaps it was more extensive than what they say, and be able to better look at what/how it was repaired.

Makes sense. I don’t like how the ad says “fender & door” but the car’s tow point cover isn’t body color.

Kinja'd!!!

Just a fender and door shouldn’t total a new car.

Should be able to. He doesn’t say which H&R coil over set he bought though.

Completely agree on all your points there - - that’s why I’d want to see more detail on the work. A fender and door wouldn’t lead to a rebuilt title, AFAIK. I gotta think suspension parts, engine mounts, etc were damaged and replaced - I would think it took a pretty hard hit.

Good body shops can make a car indistinguishable from new in how they operate...depending on what had to be fixed. You know what to do. Have it really gone over by someone you trust. If it passes, it could be a great option.

yea they are height adjustable

Judging by H&R’s website , the coilovers are of the same model/type as the set I have on my NC (Street Performance). Unless they changed something with that line of coilovers, height is the only adjustment available and it’s accomplished through the spring perch, so added height will start introducing preload past a certain point. Apart from that, they’re pretty decent if you’re comfortable being locked into an above average stiffness that rides the line between day-to-day livability and motorsport applications.

EDIT: also looks like it’s sporting RE71R rubber, which is a very aggressive 200 treadware summer tire popular among autocrossers. The grip is downright magical, but the life will be short.

It’s also missing the front splitter that’s supposed to be standard on the Club model, meaning we can add “front-end damage” to the list.

Only way I’d ever buy a rebuilt car would be if I know who wrecked it, what specifically happened to it, pictures of the damage, know and approved of the shop making the repairs and had pictures of the repairs documented along the way, then checked out by another shop I approved of once repairs were complete.

$18k doesn’t strike me as that good of a deal - you can get a used Sport for not much more without worrying about all of the above.

I’ve dealt with the Crossfire’s overly stiff ride in Detroit for years. Just worried about how low it is for potholes. I suppose worst case scenario I could always just go back to stock and then sell off the coilovers.

Good catch. Yea it was totaled, don’t know why they can’t just say what was actually replaced.

Debating if I should email/call right now asking for before pictures and receipts. Would definitely get it checked out by a different shop though.

Comparing to that Sport makes it seem like an even better IMO. That Sport is 2 grand more, doesn’t have a nav screen, is a bit soft and most importantly doesn’t have a LSD.

Forget used, you can buy a brand-new leftover 2016 for just a little more. Someone on the Miata subreddit bought a base 2016 Club for mid-22k.

But the Sport hasn’t been crashed, and I’m sure you could get it for $18k as well. If you could get them down to $15k or so on this one, it might be worth taking the flier.

Have you bought a rebuilt titled car before? If you’re planning on financing it, some banks are unwilling to lend money in these cases and I don’t know if it impacts insurance rates or willingness to cover either.

A brand new Club under $22k??? Screw this, Milky, find one of those! :D

I’ve bought a rebuilt car (cheapo SC400), but I paid cash. I looked on my credit unions site but I’ll have to call them. Certainly will make this car a no-go if I can’t get a loan/the right insurance for it.

I’m trying to spend around $20k but if I could find a new one for $22k I’d go for it. This is the cheapest new one I can find:

and this is the best deal for a used, non totaled one:

Its possible that the car may have been hit and have frame damage as well, and for it to have been totalled-pretty severe.

I’d be more interested in seeing what $8-10k would get me. I bet you could buy a nice Miata in that range.

And if I were going to spend that kind of money on a roadster, I’d be shopping FRS.

This is confusing - “I were going to spend that kind of money on a roadster , I’d be shopping FRS .”

I’m sure you could get a nice $10k Miata, but I want a nicer car. Tend to drive ‘em until they’re worthless. I could do 5 years in a ND and be happy, not so sure about a NC.

Just kind of waiting around for the right to pop up for sale, its nice not having a car payment in the meantime.

Not idea what ND or NC mean.

By FRS, I mean the Toyobaru and I refer to a small, relatively lightweight rear-wheel-drive vehicle with a manual and maybe driftability.

My cars are all worth so much less than I put into them that worthless is a moving target. One thing I do know is that the more one spends, the more dee-preesh they’re going to experience and I’d rather see my money flushed into the oil sump through solid maintenance than dee-preesh or expensive bolt-on stuff that depreciates 92% when you open the box. Or collision insurance on a newer car that cost a lot so you want to protect the investment or the bank wants to protect theirs. Not made of that kind of money...

The toyobaru twins just don’t tickle my fancy, nothing against them, just meh. I also want to try convertible life out, which they don’t offer.
