Scenario: An engine swap with a twist.

- You have to buy two cars, then swap the engines between them. Transmission swap is not required but is allowed.

- You have an unlimited budget and full access to any engineering resources you may need to complete the swap. Unlimited budget also applies to vehicle purchase.

- No “sacrificial” cars—ie no cars strictly to use for the best available parts and to dump your less desirable parts in. Both vehicles must remain functional and able to be used regularly.

- While both cars must be capable of regular use, how they are used is up to you. For example one could be your DD and the other strictly for the track, but at least one must be street legal.

- While you own either these cars you can own no others. You must keep them for at least 5 years. Modifications are allowed, up to $8000 between engine and suspension.

- Production cars only. No concepts.

- This is total fantasy, so the EPA can butt out. No emissions hoops need to be jumped through.

NOTHING HAS TO MAKE SENSE TO ANYBODY ELSE. HAVE FUN.

Here’s my pick:

Kinja'd!!!

Last-gen Silverado. Crew cab because I need room for people with legs. Not totally sold on the Z71 package but we’ll stick with it for now... either way 4x4 because I like to do a little light off roading from time to time. Obviously paint the chrome. 4.8L V8.

Kinja'd!!!

ZL1 1LE. ‘Nuff said.

The twisted logic: I want a Silvy SS. The LT4 would take on that task very well. I’ve also formed the impression of the 4.8 that while it should never have been put in a truck, it would make a wicked sports car engine. Not a ton of torque to move a truck, but it loves to rev out when it gets going. A few tweaks to it should give it plenty more power and let you rev the nuts off it. Then go full Colin Chapman on the unnecessary bits of the Camaro. So, supercharged truck and high-strung N/A V8 Camaro with all the suspension and aero goodies. Most likely wouldn’t be as fast as the ZL1 1LE stock, but it would be a unique experience :)

Your go

Obtain XJS, BMW 8-series, swap V12s. BMW V12 no longer completely muffled, adds reliability to Jag, and Jag V12 into 850 finally gives it some personality, with ability to tune for more.

Might be obvious but I still like the idea.

650hp is still plenty for a Challenger and I’d just cut a hole in the viper hood for the supercharger to stick out. I think they even have the same manual transmission.

Not entirely, but that’s well within the rules.

So instead of putting up with stereotypical issues, you fix them by removing each vehicle’s advantage over the other?

This is... interesting. I’d take a Charger for preference, myself, but... noice.

If you don’t like that, there’s always swapping a Viper engine into a ‘58 Imperial and putting the Imperial “Early Hemi” into the Viper.

What about a new ford raptor and a mustang gt350?

Out of that I’d get a screaming Voodoo raptor and an awesome V6 ecoboost mustang.

Another option would be an E63 S AMG wagon and a porsche 911 R. The merc wagon would get an awesome NA engine, RWD, and a manual while the Porsche would have a 600+ hp TTV8 and fixed ratio AWD. The E63 would need a ton of weight reduction to make it perform but it would still be awesome.

I will just buy a Corvette and keep my Miata. LS into the Miata and then the Miata motor into the Corvette. Sure the Corvette will now suck but I bet it could still be a daily driver and look cool at least. But shit LS swapped Miata will be the BEST!

I can probably just cut enough weight out of the Corvette (EXTREME SAWZALL PARTY) to make it driveable.

Ohhh... that’s an interesting one. On first glance I don’t like it because the Voodoo doesn’t put out gobs of low-end torque. But at the end of the day... the Raptor’s a dune runner by design, not for towing. Not bad.

And I’m not sure how well the 911 would work with that big lump of engine hanging off the back, but who cares? That’s part of the fun!

Considering the way most fast cars get driven it’s not like anybody would even notice the Corvette going slow

Jaguar e type and a camaro.

A v8 e type has always been a sick twisted fantasy of mine, and a V12. Camaro would be cool

When I drove a 968 back when I was in my thirties every idiot wanted to race me. And despite my ability to collect speeding tickets I never took them up on their challenges. My thought was that I was the one driving a Porsche and had nothing left to prove. As such, that car could have had something simple and less powerful under the hood and it wouldn’t have mattered all that much.

A Corvette with a Miata motor sounds perfectly reasonable to me, and matches well to my Vanagon Westfalia with a 911 engine and 911 with 95hp worth of wasserboxer fury.

This is a really tough question.

I think swapping engines and drivetrains between a 2000 Cobra R and a 2008 Volvo V70R would be interesting.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Result would be a pretty stout V8 RWD V70R daily driver and a AWD Turbo Mustang Cobra R track toy.

A V8 swapped Volvo wagon is definitely high on my dream car list, but I’ll probably end up doing it with a 740 and a small block chevy due to price constraints.

I saw that. Super impressive. But not the way I’d go, because:

a) The 4.8 was iron-block only. That’s not an issue in NA form, because you’re losing a big lump of supercharger in the swap. If you go FI you end up with more weight in the front end and screw with the balance.

b) I want a high-strung NA motor in this case. A mild cam will pull 350hp out of a junkyard 4.8, with an 80hp gain over stock at 6500rpm. Throw a bunch more money at it and I’m SURE you could get a 450hp machine revving north of the LS7's 7k benchmark. So only SS power, yes, but totally different character mixed with top-end suspension and aero.

Then it could be slow car fast at least! And I could easily fit 300 width tires. I dont really need doors, airbags, a passenger seat, hood, trunk, AC, or power steering. That has to cut some weight down. And speed holes everywhere else.

What was that Caterham James May liked? Put tires of that width on it.
