Dishwasher hooked up!

And something crazy happened! We went to ace hardware to get all the parts we thought we needed to get it hooked up (power cord, supply line, wire nuts, t-fitting, elbow fitting). The cashier goes “you are doing electrical and plumbing in one day? You’ll be back in an hour”.

We weren’t back in an hour, it’s all hooked up. I haven’t been able to run it yet since I need to install my sink cabinet, so I can hang the garbage disposal from the sink drain, so I can attach the drain hose to said disposal.

But the fact that we didn’t need to go back, win! Anything else I’ve done so far was at least 2 or 3 trips to the store, haha.

Is the crazy part that the person working the register at Ace could identify electrical and plumbing supplies? Because that’s unheard of at my two local Ace stores.

I had a nasty surprise a little while back, when the kitchen started flooding from behind the dishwasher. Turns out, the PVC line back there had just popped loose because some moron never bothered to glue the fitting! I don’t know how it held for so long.

I just wish I had an Ace or True Value. We have one old-school small-town hardware store, which is often awesome, but otherwise it’s all Blowe’s and Home Despot. The midsize stores are all 20 miles away in the smaller towns.

What a cynical thing for the cashier to say...dishwashers are pretty straightforward — there are like 2 possible plumbing fittings and usually one electrical hookup. The big PITA is getting that mofo mounted into the hole right (especially if it’s an older house).

I’ve been really impressed with everyone’s knowledge at the one I frequent. The crazy part is that he was wrong and that we didn’t need to come back!

Wait, there’s a line you need to glue? All of my fittings are compression fittings they tell me, just get them tight. With the exception of the drain hose, that one is, for me, was supplied with a clamp.

Nah, this wasn’t compression or sharkbite fittings, just plain old PVC.

ah I see, it’s scary the things you can find in houses where people cut corners that you just don’t know until you tear into it.

Yeah, I did a complete kitchen gutting, so the install isn’t too bad. And somehow I had all the luck the world, we rolled it into place and everything was perfect level!

I’ve adopted the buy twice as much as I think I need and return the rest once complete. Especially plumbing stuff. I buy at least twice the number of elbows and fittings. If it think I need a different size, I get both. It has saved me a lot of headaches.

I’m sure it has! In my case everything seemed fairly standardized and straight forward, so I was able to buy with confidence, haha.

and yes, I think the cashier had no idea what we were doing and made an uneducated guess. He was kind of annoying.

Because the supply line was going to a brand new hot water line, so the size of that was known and the elbow on the dishwasher is a standard size. soooo. yeah.

It’s definitely a win though, anytime you can get what you need for a hookup and not have to stop to grab something else, then that’s a win right there.
