Some great news for the long-term health of Mazda! “Toyota and Mazda have announced plans to build a $1.6 billion manufacturing plant in the United States that will create as many as 4,000 jobs. The Japanese automakers said in a statement Friday that the facility would be operational by 2021, but did not specify where it would be built.

Mazda plans to build new crossover vehicles for the U.S. market at the plant, while Toyota will produce its Corolla model there.

Toyota (TM) and the much smaller Mazda (MZDAF) also announced a new business partnership on Friday — the latest example of consolidation in the auto industry. Toyota will pay about $450 million for a 5% stake in Mazda as part of the deal, while Mazda will buy a stake of the same value [0.25% - LOL!] in Toyota.

In addition to the new factory in the U.S., the automakers said they would collaborate on safety and technology for electric vehicles.”

This will be great, just like when Obama praised Caterpillar and Trump praised Rheem, then both firms laid off a huge chunk of their workforce shortly thereafter. #presidentialcurse /s

This is awesome. Now instead of people moaning in separate stories about the lack of turbos in Toyobarus and Miatas, they can do it in a single story. Efficiency!

He’s definitely fake and a liar, but he’s assuredly not a news source. However, in this case, he spoke the truth.

Hahaha! Interesting point, though... If there is another generation of the 86, will it ride on a Miata chassis? Is Mazda’s partnership with Fiat limited to the 124 Spider?

Right now, Toyota licenses the Prius’ hybrid technology to Mazda for use in the Japan-only hybrid Mazda3. And Mazda rebadges Mazda2 sedans for Toyota and Toyota sells them as the Yaris iA, one of their best selling small cars. This is a good deal all around.

My money is on the 86 getting killed off and all of the people complaining about it today will start bemoaning how Toyota doesn’t make enthusiast cars and start mythologizing it.

It’s interesting to compare and contrast that decision, against this one: http://www.autonews.com/article/20170801/OEM02/170809957/evs-aren-t-the-only-answer-mazda-exec-says

For quite a while, I’ve suspected that Mazda’s real long-term strategy was essentially, design lightweight ICE platforms for as long as possible, and then when that is no longer viable, hope that someone wants their platform technology enough to buy them out. It’s a risky strategy - most anyone that can buy them out has their own platform technology, and they won’t have experience packaging electric technology - but it seems that Toyota is increasing their involvement in Mazda, so...

It doesn’t exist until it’s on dealer lots, though.

Hopefully they actually make it a liftback. You know, like the real AE86.

From another article:

Where will Toyota gain from this partnership?

On Toyota’s side, leaders have expressed interest in Mazda’s Skyactiv technology, specifically the high compression ratio Skyactiv engines that have been setting the bar for fuel efficiency in a number of categories. Mazda’s Kodo design language, which is designed to capture the soul of motion, has also been the object of admiration from Toyota leaders. While the details are still being ironed out, it should mean more big things for Toyota going forward.

Weren’t Toyota and Mazda already partners?

They were, but in a lesser capacity. Toyota has been providing hybrid technology to Mazda and Mazda has been using its Mexico plant to make Toyota vehicles. This recent partnership represents the next stage of that partnership, which should have long-term benefits for car buyers. Undoubtedly, Toyota and Mazda will continue to compete on the sales front, but this partnership should help both brands flourish in their efforts to create great cars at affordable prices.

Mazda had to do something. The currency issue with Japan was hitting them really hard, and given that they don’t have Ford’s help anymore, a plant in the US was the only way to go.

That plus the ‘yota partnership probably means they won’t be taking on water when the US economy takes another shit, which it is poised to do soon after 7 or so years of building momentum.
