Oh, absolutely. The key is to buy two-way speakers that are only rated to 30 or 40 watts so they’ll be more responsive to the lower power levels from the factory radio. There are name brand two-way speakers for as little as $40 per pair. Kenwood, Pioneer, et cetera. I paid $60 a pair for these. I may have overpaid a little, but I picked them up in a store — they wanted $70 a pair — and didn’t have to wait for them to arrive in the mail.
Stock speakers are crapola.

Do it - you will not regret it. The quality of even mid grade aftermarket speakers is so much better than most stock even if you don’t upgrade the head unit. Power and clarity.

Power handling != sensitivity.
Power handling is decided by voicecoil design (gauge, material, wind type, ohm rating), former material, and cooling design (air vents in magnet/T-yoke area.
Sensitivity is changed by voicecoil design, but also greatly controlled by suspension design (surround, spider type and count), cone mass and former mass.
Take the same exacts voicecoils built into different drivers and the sensitivity will vary greatly, but power handling will be almost the same.

I’d replace the stereo 1st if it’s a stock unit as I changed the speakers in my car for some Infinity speakers (fairly pricey) and there was barely any change, stuck in a new stereo and the speakers came alive, a lot more bass etc

You are so correct on this one sir. I’ve done the same improvement on a few cars. My 83 Prelude and daughters 1st car a 2000 Altima come to mind. Rear speakers only on Prelude but did all 4 on the Nissan. I used ebay plain box Alpine coax ones I found on eBay. The seller had a lot of them for about $12 each, individual boxed. I ordered two for rear and within the next week ordered fronts to match. And I need to say this “ALL WHIZZER CONES SUCK!” . I feel better now.

From how your comment reads, I’d say you know much more about this topic than I do. Voice coils aside, I have always assumed that a speaker rated at a billion watts would be stiffer and more resilient than a speaker rated at 40 watts. So I have always assumed that this higher-wattage-rated speaker would be less responsive at low volume levels. The Alpine speakers I just installed sound GREAT.
