Not sure if these have been posted here yet but they’re definitely the clearest shots of the new Vette I’ve seen.

That is definitely a mid-rear profile.

How long do you think the team spent trying to figure out a way to disguise the fact that it’s a rear-mid-engined car? I’m guessing a long time since it’s been rumored FOREVER that GM was going to build it and it has never materialized.

After nearly 30 years, they’ve finally found the balls to put this in production.

The aft of the cabin looks way longer than it should be. That’s a lot of wheelbase.

Probably cammo. Looks like they grafted a C7 rear facia on, too.

The rake of the windshield and “rear window” definitely point to a rear-mid configuration.

The front wheels are way back, too.

I just hope that will be an addition to the Corvette, and not a replacement. it would be sad to see the every man’s hotrod go away in favorite of a less practical mid engined 150,000 dollar super car.

*mid-rear

It’s already mid engined

While logic tends to agree, I’m not sure why everyone automatically assumes this thing will be $150k+. I’d be pretty sour if it is, as that would price it right out of my reach.

There’s no reason they couldn’t produce it for 80-100, however.

Hell, the boxter is mid-rear and it sells for less that that, even with Porsche tax.

Definitely mid-engined but I’m still not entirely convinced it won’t end up being a Cadillac for several reasons: 1) completely ignoring the ‘but heritage’ argument of going from FMR to RMR, the Corvette is one of the highest-selling sports cars in the country and I don’t see how jacking up the price and decreasing production numbers (both likely results of changing engine layouts) would make business sense to GM 2) as GM’s luxury performance brand, Cadillac’s kind of stagnating right now and a RMR halo car would be a great way to introduce some brand identity and get rid of the perception that Cadillac’s are for old people 3) Cadillac’s stated they’re going to introduce nine new models in the next five years and unless they go the route of BMW and introduce a redundant amount of SUV and crossover models, there’s plenty of space in the lineup for a new halo car which 4) Cadillac doesn’t currently have, unlike Chevy with the Corvette.

In all likelihood it will be a Corvette but it does seem kind of weird for GM to be abandoning a 60+-year-old institution when there’s holes in their other brands to introduce the same car.

All fair points.

I don’t agree that moving mid-rear will automatically push the vehicles price significantly higher, though.

Sure, the current chassis is very similar to the C6 so the production costs would’ve been amortized a bit more, but whenever you change platforms(which is eventually inevitable) you’re starting from scratch and the costs are there. I just don’t see why a FM platform would be tremendously more than a MR platform.

Fair enough, agree to disagree.

I still don’t think an all new Mid-rear layout would be significantly more than an all new mid-front like it currently has.

Maybe not significantly higher, but if Chevy’s going to make the change to MR it makes sense that they won’t be going up against the Cayman or Alfa 4C (the two cheapest RMR cars on the market that the C7 already beats), they’d position themselves to compete against the mid-tier exotics like the McLaren 570S and Audi R8 at the least, maybe even the Huaracan and 488 depending on the kind of performance they can get out of the car. As a result, they’ll likely have to invest more into the development of the car to make sure that it’s not just a ‘bargain performance’ option like the old C7 was, but is also a complete package of build quality and technology (interior materials, more adjustable ride/suspension, better infotainment technology, etc.) as well. Additionally, that kind of quality can’t exactly be mass-produced at the same rate as the regular C7 (hence why GM sell multiple times as many Corvettes than McLaren or Ferrari despite the high demand for those cars), so the economy of scale would be reduced just by virtue of production numbers.

How much of a price difference that increase in quality will correlate to is obviously anyone’s guess at this point, but considering the R8 and McLaren both run $150k+ base MSRP’s there’s plenty of wiggle room for Chevy to significantly undercut those prices while still running well into the $100k range. I think the car would still be a value at that price but since that’s well beyond the territory of what most ‘average’ people could afford or aspire to afford in the future it might cut down on demand for the car even further. Plus there will be a bit of inevitable brand snobbery about a Corvette( scoff $120k for a Chevy?!) that would turn away people who are looking for a more elite brand status versus just raw value and performance, which is why I think that calling it a Cadillac would make more sense from the luxury standpoint.

I think it would be funny of chevy to tease this and then just release another mid-front corvette (which I hope happens, not a fan of rear engine anything). I think the 150,000 price is honestly not that far off, because the Camaro ZL1's and SS’s are into where the corvette was priced in the C5 and C6 days. So I would think regardless the Corvette “base” model is going to creep into $80k to $100K range and a Z06 level package at the $125k - $150k mark.

Yeah, I definitely see the business case in making this a caddy. The gigantic side vents in this thing kinda give me an “Arts and Science” vibe, too.

However, another counter point would be the way some Camaro’s are out-perforning the Vettes. With the huge performance leap GM has given the Camaro’s, they need something new for the Vette to stand alone as the King of the performance Chevy’s.

Also, in response to the Cayman/Alfa comment, the Corvette has always been known for punching well above it’s price point. Having a mid-rear Vette at the 70-80k price point would keep that tradition going and bring new excitement to the marque.

Whatever it is, I sure hope they’re able to keep this around the $80k mark. Otherwise, I most likely wont ever be seeing one in my garage.

We’ll just have to wait and see.
