If I was spending that on a winter beater I’d take the alpina. I don’t think the shiftable autos came out until after the facelift though. I’m also curious if that’s a reworked m62 or m62tu I think Sept 1998 is the switchover.

This is ... curious. Hate the wheels, hate the “improvements,” hate the color ... is it me, or does Alpina make BMWs worse?

Respectfully disagree. I prefer the Alpina way of making fast BMWs than BMW M.

I want to say it was the Z8 where they yanked out the manual and put in a slushbox. How that improves things I don’t know. Then again I’ve never driven an Alpina or Dinan anything, although I’ve driven my share of BMWs. Most fun? ‘76 2002 ... no power anything (well, maybe brakes) and it just carved up the road.

Put it this way...
BMW M tips the cars towards track cars, but Alpina’s design philosophy are long-range highway cruisers, more akin to designing business jets. Basically they want to design a car that’s absolutely stable and comfortable for the Autobahn.
Motor Trend summed it up nicely in this B6 vs M6 comparison:

Fair enough - my very last car (‘97 SHO) was used as a tourer for the eastern part of the U.S., so I appreciate that. My question would be whether, as a normal guy - not an auto journalist - I’d notice the difference on a long drive. Not something I’ll likely find out, I know.
