Kinja'd!!!

I like to think myself an opportunist when it comes to cars, I seem to come across some pretty decent deals on interesting mostly mundane vehicles so if I have the cash I jump on them keeping no more than two at a time. Some people say I’m mad and question my sanity. Who keeps cycling cars every 4-7 months ? Boring people, that’s who!

The Cycle has reset and I have picked up my DD a 98 Sable and my new winter beater tomorrow, which I shall reveal tomorrow.

What’s your motivation for buying cars, or even liking cars?

I like driving cars. So l I like owning different ones, just to have a different experience. My current car was an it different tho. I sold my 01 Civic because I wanted to grow in my skill and confidence in wrenching on a car, and I figured the best way to do that was buy an old car that needed lots of work. And I bought a car with lots of potential so I would have more motivation to fix it and eventually start actually modifying it.

I like old cars because every single bit of working on them is like being Lord Carnarvon opening Tut’s tomb. The mix of ancient things preserved and the forensics of what has happened with the passage of time...

Driving them, being in them, has kind of a living history quality.

I liked to experience different cars, but mainly, I never found one I wanted to keep. The Tacoma may have won the “keep” battle. Now the project, I fully intend to swap out every couple of years, although I actually want to finish one for a change, so the Cougar may stay a little longer than that.

Usually the impetus for changing projects? Everything gets done except the bodywork, and I don’t want to spend the money on bodywork because it’s something that I’ve never done, nor do I have the proper space for it.

I’ve gotten to the point to where I’m sick of wrenching on cars. And I’m also tired of uncomfortable cars to the point that I just broke my no FWD cars and purchased a FWD car and a FWD based AWD car just for ride quality.

Driving a lot of exciting cars at minor cost. I went
306 cabriolet > CRX del sol > RX-8 (192) > Mégane II RS > 307 CC > RX-8 (231) > 208 GTI > Mégane III RS over the course of 4 years. And those were the ones I didn’t keep

I like driving the shit out of a car. Just putting as many miles as possible and using it for as many unpractical things as possible. Getting 100% out of every car is the goal. Hence why I enjoy my Miata, I can drive it to 100% of its capability every day and its practical enough for all of my needs. I’ve only owned two cars in 8 years. I dont think I could ever do short term ownership.

That’s funny cuz I’ve only owned FWD and a Fwd based AWD car. Except my 96 Tacoma.

First and foremost I love driving. Beyond that Aesthetics and environment are huge for me. So I won’t buy an ugly car just because it’s good.

As far as buying goes:

Dream Cars: I’m on forever searches for my dream cars. I know it’s time to make a move when one “falls into my lap”. By that I mean that a car that ticks all or almost all of the boxes comes along at a time when I can reasonably afford it and have the space for it. That’s how I got both M3's, and that is how I’m hoping to get a 911.

“Need” Cars: I will hone in on a model or two and go to work on a search for the best deal for the spec that I want. These are the toughest searches because I don’t really like most new cars. In the case of my Ranger it was tough because so may older trucks are really beat, and they’re all overpriced.

My motivation for getting a new car is usually one of three things. 1 cost/enjoyment ratio is not up to par. 2. The car needs overly frequent repairs. 3. I’ve had an accident...Any time a body repair has gone beyond a small amount of “paintless dent repair” I sold/traded it. It never looks as good.

I started out cycling through fun/interesting cars every 1-2 years. Then I got into track days and needed a fast commuter. Now that I live within walking distance of work, I have a pure track car.
