Right, then...

Last weekend, my friend’s 2008 Ridgeline burnt up. No one was hurt, but the truck is a loss. We suspect it was electrical as the fire was preceded by a pop and the engine shutting down. Is this something that should be reported to Honda for tracking? I know the 2006 and 2007's had a recall for some wiring issues, but nothing I can find on the 2008.

Maybe not Honda directly but a NHTSA complaint?

When the insurance company reports it as a loss, it would go into whatever database Carfax and other services use, right? Is it a stretch to imagine that somewhere, this is compiled or reported on by manufacturers to study their vehicles?

Like, when GM says, “longest lasting trucks on the road” that data has to have come from somewhere...

That said, if I were the owner of that truck, I would want Honda to know about it, and would probably find a way to report it personally, even if it would inevitably go into the corporate black hole and be ignored.

Yeah, that’s what the NHTSA complaint process is for - reporting safety issues.
