Kinja'd!!!

With the start of the school year fast approaching, I’m looking forward to my month abroad in New Zealand this January. Obviously there’s a lot more to a country than just cars, but I am a bit curious to see what’s what in terms of cars in Kiwi country. Israel, the only other foreign country I’ve been to, has absolutely no car culture whatsoever. Is New Zealand any better?

I know there’s a guy in NZ who calls himself a wizard and has a car made from the front ends of two VWs, but that’s more an odd NZ-related car-related fact than NZ car culture.

Of course you could always ask SKZ... AHA HA I slay me.

Jeez, that’s an old reference. How long ago was Supreme Kiwi Zero or whatever kicked to the curb?

Dude, there is a huge car scene in New Zealand. They love their rotaries down there, too.

NZ has a pretty massive car culture when it comes to JDM stuff. They have no car industry and have to import everything... You’ll find stuff mostly from Japan and Australia there.

I can’t seem to find much to suggest New Zealand is much better. What say you?

NZ has a MASSIVE car culture. You can get a license there younger than other places, and they get all sorts of awesome japanese imports, and they are pretty insanely into rally. If there is anything at Millen’s place during the time you are there that would be worth a look in.

I searched the name and found your recount about three years ago. I missed most of that nuttery, thankfully.

It is a wonderful, magical place, no joke. My wife and I visited about 16 years ago, and there’s loads of great car stuff. The circuit in Taupo, a ways south of Auckland near the lake of the same name, hosts drift events and all kinds of bonkers stuff. There’s little closet restoration shops everywhere, we ran into several car shows, got passed by a random pack of blower Bentleys in the rain, JDM & hot rod Aussie V8s everywhere, it was great. There’s a cool museum we went to as well, but I forget where that was.

Forgetting the cars, the rest of the country is spectacular. Wonderful people too.

A month in NZ is not enough. You might get round the North Island in that time. But to do both islands in a month is going to be an exercise in missing lots of stuff in the south.

It’s also worth pointing out that there are distinct cultural differences between North and South too.

Above all, whilst you are there...respect and pay respect to the Maori culture.

We are only doing the North Island, and we are staying a day or two in a Maori Village.

Unlike Australia or America, they have never made their own cars. This means they don’t tax or restrict imports so they have all sorts of dope JDM stuff. They also have no allegiance to muscle cars or tuners or whatever since they’ve never built them. Should be plenty to see.

drive on the left.

you’ll see a lot of grey imports from Japan due to no restrictions as NZ has no car industry anymore.
