My buddy Dennis just completed a lifelong bucket list item. About a half our ago. He always talked about riding Route 66 with his dad, but they waited a bit too long so Dennis took his pops in ash form and spread him along the way.

That’s awesome. I was just on that very spot a couple of weeks ago. Doing Rte 66 is also on my wife’s and my bucket list. Maybe after the kids go to college.

That’s fantastic - but bittersweet, at the same time. I’d be lying if I said my eyes weren’t watering a little bit...

The only section of 66 we rode on our trip a few years back was this epic stretch of it near St Clair, MO. We were traveling south east to Nashville, avoiding highways, and it lead us to this piece of American history.

If it wasn’t for the signs, the painted “66" on the street, or the few busnisses along that stretch named “Rt66 something or other” we would have missed it.

Why am I making this post about me?

Because it keeps me from crying.

Guys, go do shit with your dads while you still can.

Just read through the blog. Haha I cant imagine making it through that whole trip with one set of clothing. Very entertaining read though, seems like quite the adventure.

Well said. I try to drag my dad out offroading with me, but he says he’s too old. Gotta find a way to keep him from wussing out.

Yah, he’s no spring chicken, but his dad was always so fit that I think he always thought there’d be “next year”. He’s a helluva good guy.

Yeah, that struck a bit of a nerve, as I’m 49, and my dad is now 72 - he’s in pretty good health, but there’s never a guarantee of ‘next year’, sadly.

I’m sure he is a helluva good guy - - I only skimmed the posts (I’ll read the full thing later on), but this just seems like the sort of thing that only good guys do, I guess. Kudos to him for completing the trip - I’m sure there was some laughter, some fun, and some tears along the way.

That’s awesome. Did this drive 2 years ago with the wife, still our favorite vacation.

When I was 20, my mom and I took an epic trip around the western U.S. There were stops at the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Redwood National Forest, Sequoia National Forest, aw hell, basically every major national forest or monument from Arizona to California to Washington. She told me last year that she wanted to do it again with me and my family. We thought we had plenty of time. She was barely old enough to retire.

She died this past spring. She didn’t even make 70.

People, go out and do the things you say you want to do before it’s too late.

Similar boat. 37, but my dad is 73. He’s starting to “think” like an old man and so I really need to make him go on an adventure with me.

Cheers!

Oh man, I didn’t see that coming. So sorry to hear it. You are absolutely right.

Emailing my dad to see about setting up a guys trip, right now. Thanks for the push.

And cheers, to you, too! Thanks for posting this - it’s a great story, with a nice reminder to get out and have an adventure with our parents while we can - -

I just got back home from a similar trek. Went from Ocean City MD to Sacramento on US50 in order to take my parent’s ashes to SF bay.
