It’s actually 2/8, but I have plenty of memories with this gen of Corolla hatch - we went through two in the end. Super cheap durable and reliable cars which get the job done. Funny getting attached to a Corolla, but I miss it to this day.

Looked like this, the first one was beige and the second one was silver.

The base models were just as you describe - reliable fuel efficient affordable cars. The GTS got the 4A-GE and sportier suspension, which made it a GTI competitor back in the day. Super fun little hatch, for sure.

Well dang. How did that end up? From ripping the interior out of mine it seems VERY thin and not particularly crash-safety-oriented.

I counter that with a hatchback that has two 8.2L engines.

16.4L is just not enough. No replacement for displacement, haven’t you heard?

thankfully relatively low speed on a dirt track at a mates place. worst injury was a few burst blood vessels in one of the other mates hands because it rolled over WITH HIS HAND OUT THE WINDOW.

Made life long mates with one of the guys who stopped to help as they saw it happen from the road as they drove by the property.

Also we could start the thing with a plastic spoon. They’re not safe. they’re terrible. but they’re light with a 4A-GE if you’re lucky.

That’s pretty much why I got one. Light and 4A-GE. In a few years when I hopefully start doing HPDE and other road course stuff with it on the regular, a cage is a high priority.

Well yeah, the GTS is RWD and just a step away from the Fujiwara Tofumobile from Initial D. These standard models were FWD and even carburetted. Both are fun in their own way though.

I’m not talking about the AE86. The FX16 GTS was front drive with a 4A-GE, sport suspension, and 4 wheel disc brakes, as opposed to the base Corolla FX which had a 4A-C and rear drums.
This one has a 20-valve swap, but the GTS came standard with a 16 valve 4A-GE.

Ah, I thought you were on about the AE86-related Corolla GT-S. Hooray for confusing overlapping model names.

Kinja'd!!!

We got the AE82 Corolla GT-S as the Corolla GT Twin-Cam 16-Valve in Europe, hence why I haven’t heard of it being called the GT-S before. Those must’ve been super fun, and probably a bargain today considering everyone’s going for the RWD AE86 chassis instead.

Ah, yeah international model nomenclature is always wonky, especially when you could get 3 completely distinct Corolla models at the same time.
