A 28 year old was apprehended by Dutch police. He was driving his 20+ year old Renault Twingo without insurance, a lapsed inspection, a suspended drivers license and with an alcohol odor. But, most surprisingly, he had two stolen lampposts on his roof. But that wasn’t all:

To make things even more absurd, when his ‘97 Twingo had broken down but before police arrived a good Samaritan showed up who wanted to defuse this rather dangerous situation. He did so by towing the lamppost carrying Twingo to a safer space. His towing vehicle: A Citroën 2CV (600 cc 2 cylinder boxer engine, 29 hp).

The driver of the Twingo refused an alcohol test and was arrested. The 2CV driver acted as a witness for the police. August 1st, 2017.

Only in Russia Florida The Netherlands...

what a berk, no red rag attached to the front or rear of poles for safety.

Exactly. That’s what I forgot to mention. That made it even more dangerous.

The samaritan clearly would be hard to surprise with anything. An odd enough fellow to be driving a 2CV, and without question help a Twingo with lamp posts on top - I get the sense that he can handle anything life throws at him with barely a raised eyebrow.

Agreed. Also interesting that he had that tow rope with him, because I doubt the loser in the Twingo had it. So he really is well prepared for everything. The 2CV seems to have a tow hook btw.

He has the ability to take the time to stop and help a drunk, is willing to cheerfully help a man who’s drunk and in a perverse situation, very well prepared, odd in his choice of car, etc. Someone of the sort it’d be very worth having a beer with.

I’m impressed those things stayed on the roof like that, with what looks like a single ratchet strap.

And then yeah, the guy in the 2CV probably has some amazing stories.

In the Florida re-make of this story:

The Twingo is a Dodge Neon

The lamp posts are alligators

The booze is meth

The 2CV is a Chevy Corvair

The tow rope is a chain

The good Samaritan gets shot at

Absurdity aside, d’awwwww Twingo!! :3 Probably the cutest car I’ve ever seen..... are they reliable? I want one now...

They’re reliable. Maybe not Corolla reliable, but certainly daily driver reliable. The featured one here is slightly over 20 years old and probably has had nothing but the most rudimentary maintenance for the last 10 or so years.

The earliest ones are almost legal for US import, too.

Yes. They left dealerships first in early 1993, which is more than 24 years ago.

Take this one for example. €500. First registration: Mai 1993, or 24 years and 3 months ago. Not the best one out there, but a very early one none the less.

Edit: this one seems to be in better condition (better maintained, valid inspection) and costs only €450! August 1993.

In about a year and a half I’ll have to buy up a load of these little buggers and ship them to the US.

Might not be a bad business model, at least during a short window of time. Buy em cheap, sell em cheap, there will be demand at the right price.

This is fake news. This actually happened in Florida and the license plates were changed using Photoshop.

How did a 2CV manage to tow what had to be well in excess of 2,000lbs without self destructing? A Charger R/T can’t pull more than half that.

A 2CV has a tow rating of 400 kg, a Chrysler 300C 5.7 of 1725 kg. So 3500 lbs. In Europe. Anyway, the 2CV probably just drove rather slowly (30-50 kmh?) and for a short distance.

Oh, American market 300s can only pull 2000 lbs.
