I have a week with no family, so every night will be spent in the garage.

having been frustrated by rusty bolts on my brakes, and knowing dye would need a few days to dry, I moved on to some more cosmetic jobs.

on the list for this week is: headlight restore, realign bumper and fender, AAALLLLL the fluids (oil, diff, trans, coolant, brake, steering etc.), rewire amp (twelve thumbed gorilla did it before), redo headliner, thermostat, fuel filter, short shifter, pedal covers, brakes, fix a leak, adjust handbrake, fix exhaust heat wrap, fix tear in seat, dye seats, redo trunk carpet, ermm....

I THINK that’s all that sitting in the pile of goodies in the basement, but I’m confident I’m missing something. There’s a spreadsheet, but I don’t want to share that from embarrassment :P

a reminder of the mspaint rendered plan. One slight change is that I’m now planning to vinyl wrap the car, likely in a darker grey/silver.

and then, before I realised it, it was 11pm, so I showered up, and made two delicious quiches.

Mind to go into more detail about the dying process? What did you use? How did it work out?

I used duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint

Kinja'd!!!

basically prep is just making sure the fabric is as clean and dry as possible. Then like any paint its light coats to get even coverage.

I’ve done this before and it works great, impossible to tell it’s not original fabric colour. It holds well also.

My only concern with today’s project is that I didn’t want the centre dyed/painted. So it was taped off, and then I also used a plastic board that I held in place as I sprayed.

The reveal of taking off the middle has me so eager to get home tonight!

What sort of clear coat did you use for the headlights? That looks very nice.

I need a Cougar list. I’ve made it through all of the stash of parts. It still needs many, many more parts. Every job left on it seems so large now, though. Or expensive. I do still have my electric headlight door conversion kit, but I need to repair the body damage on the passenger side for the door to open correctly.

Those headlights look good. I just went over the headlights on the Honda with some polishing compound. Not a long term solution, I know, but good for selling. The seats look great too, how long does a dye job like that last?

I made a list, then I colour coded it based on whether it was essential maintenance, desired maintenance, realistic project, and ranging out to dream project.

It’s a great way to brain storm.

If I had a bugeye I would have to track down a set of Prodrive UK300 lights. I grew up watching the world rally cars and they just look right.

my foglights I did with Krylon Stained Glass Canary Yellow.

My headlights are Krylon Stained Glass Cobalt Blue.

Kinja'd!!!

the foglights are about 6 coats of yellow, while the headlights are just two coats of blue. The headlights will also be buffed back slightly so it should just be a slight tinge of blue, rather than an obvious (illegal) blue

and they go for a mint! just not in the budget, but that’s my era of great love for rally too, which is sort of how I ended up with a bugeye.

Impossible to find and not cheap. I’m also not sure if they are US legal.

Does this work on synthetics also?
I had a Mazda 6 with very faded back seats that could have used some dye but I didn’t find anything appropriate.

I’ve only ever used it on fabric and hard plastic. $7 a can, certainly very little to risk in grabbing a can and spraying somewhere inconspicuous

You can tell they were supposed to look like the WRC front end but they just got it wrong.

yeah, I suspect the words “legally distinct” were used. close, but they somehow come off as ricey whereas the WRC version feels functional and cool

It’s because they integrated the lights into the space next to the grill.

I’m super jealous of this fantastical land where you can spend evenings in your garage. My family was away for a week last month and I had dreams of working on things in the garage, then I remembered that it’s over 100 degrees in there until about 3 AM.
