I don’t know how much the story was exaggerated or altered but saving 75 people from the battlefield by yourself while unarmed is completely heroic and totally nuts. Heroically nuts.

Well, the details might be questionable, but the framework is all correct. He never carried a gun in combat, he did stay behind to tend to the wounded after evac, he was single-handedly responsible for saving 75 men.
However, after re-reading his MoH Citation, if anything the movie downplayed what he did, as he did quite a few more absurd things after the events of hacksaw ridge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmond_Doss

It was directed by Mel Gibson, director of some of the most historically innacurate films ever made.

Yeah, it might seem unbelievable, but that’s not even the craziest war heroics out there. Here’s a few: http://www.cracked.com/article_17019_5-real-life-soldiers-who-make-rambo-look-like-pussy.html

I dunno, all those guys went into battle with a gun. Doss went into battle with a roll of gauze.

The movie has a really slow start - I did wonder at what point this guy was going to see battle.

I don’t think I’ve seen any of his historical movies, like Braveheart or The Patriot, so I wasn’t aware of that. After doing some googling..... yeah, I see what you mean.

Braveheart is still a fantastic film. Definitely worth a watch despite the inaccuracies. The Patriot is awful.
