Every so often I have the irrational need to buy a car, and today it just happens to be the Porsche 914.
Sure it’d be slow and impractical but hot damn is it cool. One that’s a little rough around the edges can be had for fairly cheap and with some work could be an awesome weekend buzzabout.
Am I an idiot? What car have you been lusting after recently?

Every so often? I have fight that irrational need every day. There was a fucking Volvo Amazon wagon for $5k north of me the other day and despite having nowhere to put it and three other cars, I was ready to get it. Only the fear of my wife’s reaction keeps me at bay. My neighbor has a 914. I’ve never driven one, they must be light. I have a 240Z, not a heavy car, and in modern terms it is not the quickest, so I think a 914 would feel down on power, but maybe the lightness helps a lot, I think the 914-6 was a 2.0 so the smaller ones must be a bit smaller. I bet they are good on curvy roads though.

Someone out there swaps the Subaru EG33 flat sixes into these. That should solve the slow problem.

Pre-smog Mercedes coupes
I want my next car to be one of these while there still cheap. It seems like 914's (or really all old porches that wernt 911's) were cheaper a few years ago, now even the crusty examples are $2000.

Back in the ‘70s my grandfather had an olive green one like the one above. Traded in his orange Vega kammback for it. I still remember the sounds and smells of that car, and one of these days I shall have one just like it.
If you haven’t seen it, check out the episode of Wheeler Dealers that featured a 914 - it’s one of my favorites.

Yes, you do.
I still need a Class 11 Beetle.
