Having personally witnessed a cut off wheel fail and bounce off a pair of safety glasses then hit a cinderblock wall with an ping I support this position. I wasn’t the one doing the cutting and that pair of scratched safety glasses became a shop reminder.

There’s a reason cutting discs are called death wheels. You think a Dremel wheel explodes nicely? Try a 9" grinder. Those things are like grenades when they go.

A friend of mine lost the cornea in his left eye when a wire came out of the wire wheel mounted on his bench grinder. A few more millimeters and it would have punched through the retina and out the back of his eye.
Now he always wears eye protection.

On top of it being cool looking this is why I changed from the wheel of death on my grinder to a diamond edge all metal steel cutting blade. It may cost $15 but it will last longer and not end up in my jaw.
