Kinja'd!!!

This is the upstairs landing, and there’s a generous eighth inch gap between the edge of the plywood and the door trim on the bottom right. So I have to cover it with some trim. Only problem is that I don’t know which looks better, the quarter-round or the decorative molding. I have have the quarter-round on the floor of the closet and the molding as the toe strips in the two rooms. Obviously I would paint the quarter-round white if I went with it, but which one should I use?

Can we see wider pics? I don’t see why you can’t just use baseboard but I’m sure I’m missing something.

Quarter round is used by builders as a “we fucked up here” hallmark. Don’t use quarter round.

1) Don’t use the quarter round.

2) the option on the left, what you’re calling the decorative molding, I’m 75% sure is not intended for baseboard applications.

As others have said, quarter round is for lazy fuckers that don’t want to redo wall base.

OK, here’s an idea. It’s what, 4" x 1/8"? Just fill it with color matched wood putty and be done with it. You’ve got nothing to lose by trying.

It’s totally outdoor plastic trim that looks good as toe strip and transitions well into baseboard.

I fear that the decorative molding will get stepped on and marked up real fast.

I agree w/ the others regarding the use of quarter round. If you must go that route, use base shoe. It looks like quarter round but doesn’t stick out so far.

Quarter round is used because real hardwood floors cannot be butted tight against walls. They need a small expansion gap, which can then be hidden.

That’s what baseboards are for not quarter rounds. Quarter rounds are for when you redo a floor without pulling the baseboards, which is lazy construction.

My house has the original floor and original baseboards and still needs quarter rounds. It was built in 1940 when nothing was lazy about construction.

Can you source trim that matches the baseboard in the back? The quarter-round looks more natural to me, but apparently only because it’s a common flub-cover. The other doesn’t look like a baseboard. Vote: baseboard.

If it’s original to the house, you might have better luck calling older hardware stores that have been in business forever and ever and haven’t really cleaned out older stock.
