Hmm, maybe with the engine in the middle they might be able to make it handle worth a damn. I built up a scaryfast Rabbit pickup in the ‘80s and it was a monster in a straight line, but despite throwing hundreds, if not thousands, into the suspension I never was able to turn it into a GTI.
