I have remarkably trusting friends. I was given the keys to 2007 Honda CBR 600RR pretty much on a whim. So lets dive right into it.

2007 CBR600RR. 599 CC I4. 15K RPM redline. 400lbs. 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds if you have the skill. Top speed of 250km/h. Numbers over, how is it to ride?

First off, this is a 600cc Supersports bike that I can do 5 hours on at a time with NO issues what so ever. I dont get it. After the 5 hours mark my butt starts to get a little sore, but the fact that I can last that long to begin with is insane. The position I found wasnt actually THAT much more agressive then my SV is either (granted, my SV is modified).

Those long hours mean that when I was in North Carolina with this thing, I got to be very comfortable with it and was quickly pushing the limits. the way this thing handles is just sublime. Flicking this thing through the curves of Deals gap is definitely in my top 10 life experiences. The shape of the bike is also SUPER conducive to leaning off of it, to the point where I felt more comfortable with my body OFF the bike then on it.

And the motor. the little 599 4 pot block in this bike is a peach. Smooth as silk, the noise this bike makes as the needle sweeps the dial is about as close as you can come to having a street legal F1 car. Seriously, having a motor with a 15K redline is something everyone should experience at least once in their life. The power band is nice and linear, making it incredibly easy to up the pace when you want to.

On top of having a fantastic chassis and breath taking engine, the brakes on this bike also deserve some praise. Not only were they strong and resisted fade, but they were very controllable too. Lots of feel through the lever and I could almost tell the millisecond the rear tire would start pulling off the ground. Yes they really are that great.

So an engine that just absolutely SCREAMS and hauls ass past the 9 on the dial, a chassis that seems to read your mind and comfort that really wasnt all that bad.


So why dont I own one already? For starters, that lack of torque... I like my bikes to have a little oomph in them everywhere in the RPM range. This thing simply didnt have that. Below 7K rpm, it was like riding a 250. Then engine HAS to be spinning like mad to go anywhere.

My second grip comes from the tank on this bike. or rather the lack of it. even with gentle riding, I struggled to get more then 220 KM out of a full load. If I was romping on it, I would see 120km. 70 MILES ON A FULL TANK OF GAS. To me, thats just not enough fun time.

And speaking of pricey things, insurance rates on something like this are...painful. It would 3 times more expensive to insure this then it is my SV.

The final verdict? This is a track bike that can be used on the street. Not ideal for the job, but in those rare moments where you can let it breath a little, there is nothing else on earth that comes close to the exhilaration this

If you ever make it down to BIR, RA, or BHF when I’m there, I’ll let you have a crack on the 675R. You can learn what a scalpel feels like.

I don’t have enough personal experience to verify this but the CBR is the most “neutral” of the 600s while the R6 and 675 are twitchy knife edge scalpels.

One of my main arguments to people who insist you NEED a liter bike for performance are numbers like these...

I picked up a 1st gen 675 and after my ‘15 ZX-6R it feels 90% less usable day-to-day. Have yet to track it, wanna do that next season.

The 675 is not a street bike. The riding position just does not work on the street.

But at high speeds the wind hits me right at my neck and wants to tear off my helmet. How in the world can that work on a track? I need to get a new windshield for it.

Either your tuck needs work, your helmet is too loose, or a new windshield. I use a ZeroGravity Double-bubble.

I actually rode Valsidalv’s daytona (briefly and on old tires. I’m sure he’s okay with me taking it out again on fresh boots) its certainly another level.
