Hard to tell for sure but it looks like the M3 is Daytona Violet. I believe it was a production color on the E30 and E36. BMW Individual will pull any color out of their history for you. Runs about $5k I think.

I think you may be right. I boosted the purple saturation when I edited the photo to bring out the color. It looked nearly black in person, even in harsh sunlight.

The current owner said that the original owner knew it was the last SLR scheduled to leave the factory, so he specifically requested it get painted a unique color.
