On the opposite end of the spectrum there is this beast. 28.5L, 4 cylinders.

BRM at one point had a 1.5L supercharged V16.

It’s a 14,000 rpm 1.5L. How much torque do you think it makes?

Holy shit that’s 7.125 liters per cylinder. That’s almost four whole 2 liter bottles of soda per cylinder.

I bet it’s tricky to get off the line. There’s probably a fine line between stalling it and burning out the clutch. It’s also a historically significant car. They’re not going to go all out and risk breaking it.. This looked more like a gentle cruise around the circuit.

Its mindblowing. I can’t even fathom how much fuel it burned.

Good god, were they trying to rev it to 50,000 rpm?
Edit: I just looked it up and while its not as high revving as I imagined, 600hp out of 1.5L is really significant for a 60 year old engine. I don’t imagine it had any concept of torque though.

You usually hear the explosions resonating through the exhaust pipe. No. Those were just straight up explosions.

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re driving an entire war, this is the car for you.

Counterpoint: Lampredi was so enthralled with the idea of torque that he designed (and built) an in-line
twin.
That did not work, but the four-cylinder “500" certainly did.
Post scriptum: apart from Honda’s efforts, has anyone else tried an east-west engine in a GP car? Am I wrong or they were the only ones?
