I just want to take a moment to thank GM for the way they designed this engine (L83 - 5.3L V8 in 2016 Silverado 1500). The drain plug and filter are right in your face, super easy to get to. No stray oil anywhere, no filter hidden up above a bunch of coolant hoses, plenty of clearance for hands to get in there while a frame rail in front protects it from anything below. Perfect.

But a 90 degree mounted oil filter is so great for spilling oil all over dozens of components that really need that rustproofing! It’s a conspiracy.

Not sure. I used ramps because of how far down the front bumper aero thing goes, but after changing it this time and seeing where everything is at, I can probably go at it from the driver side while it’s on the ground without a problem. I’ll try that next time.

Hah this... and when on a lift and you try to lift the bucket up you’re suddenly handling an oily, slippery bucket, a stream of hot, likely gooey oil, and a drainplug you don’t want to lose either... The spray went a good 3-4m after dropping the bucket... I don’t normally curse but expletives were suddenly found.

With my 2006 I could. It was easier to slide in from behind the wheel due to the air dam on the front. Now that I removed the air dam and added a leveling kit I can do it on a creeper.

The Silverado/Sierra (99+) have always had the filter and plug in a nice, easily serviceable place, but the angled drain plug didn’t come about until 16. So prior to that it’s a game of “how far sideways is this dirty oil gonna shoot?” and at least half the time it makes a damn mess.

I’ve gotten pretty good at predicting that angle over the years. I only make a mess maybe 20% of the time now.
