Kinja'd!!!

More like The Neverending Story meets Visitor Q. The film is an affront on many levels, not least, to viewers’ intelligence.

I thought the CGI critter was OK though.

“The show looks so cute. Kids’ll love it! And it looks so cruddy, their ironic hipster parents will love it.”

Did you even watch the trailer before you watched the movie? There’d be absolutely no mistaking this for a children’s movie if you had. But even if you hadn’t, the violence and darkness is no different than Grimm’s Fairy Tales of old, which frequently feature violence against children and rarely ever end “happily ever after.” And all our beloved Disney stories are intensely sanitized versions of much older, more graphic stories.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but it looks good. I often tend to seek out A.O. Scott’s opinion because he’s always critical and a bit stern, even of movies he really likes. That said, this is perhaps one of the most glowing reviews I think he’s ever given:

That, alone, speaks volumes. I know what I’m watching this weekend.
