Anyone know anything about XJS HVAC systems? There is an incredibly shortage of diagrams and schematics of this damn thing. Also more photos.

I’m very tempted to forcibly rip out every trace of this godforsaken HVAC system and replace it with an Arduino. Christ.

If they’re the same as the XJ sedans then i know somewhat about them

Any clue what color wires or where I should be looking under the dash so I can jumper +12 straight to the blower motors and A/C compressor? Everything related to this godforsaken Delenair Mk 2 system is a complete catastrophe. I found this fun looking assortment of what appear to be relays and fairy dust under the passenger scuttle panel but I have no clue what I should shove +12v through to make the silly fan spin. I believe the part that has failed on me is the fan control knob which requires disassembly of the entire center console to remove (ugh). Once I can figure out how to control this stupid thing with toggle switches I’ll buy a relay board and an Arduino and enjoy computer control and a sensible A/C system.

I remember my grandpa agonizing over this on his XJS. He ended up running the blower motor from a switch mounted in one of the ashtrays.

That car is still patiently waiting for me in my grandma’s garage. I just need a bigger garage, lol.

That’s exactly how I plan on wiring mine up. Unfortunately there’s no godforsaken wiring diagrams handy on the intertubes for me to figure out what wires to run to the switches

I can tell you that air goes into it and then comes out in a heated or cooled state.

The power for the blower fans should come through a relay in the driverside footwell.

Kinja'd!!!

the brown and white wires should be the ones feeding power to the blower motors.

This might be helpful

YOU ARE AMAZING. Now I just need to find/run a new wire for the A/C compressor and I should be golden. I bought a fuckin’ Haynes manual ($20 for the digital verision!) and it was utterly worthless.

Programmable microcontroller. I used them for all sorts of neat things in school and have been looking for an excuse to get back into using them. I could potentially use one with a cellular shield (addon board) and a relay board and code an app for my phone that would give me complete remote control over my locks, A/C, etc.. so that I could wind down the windows and unlock the car as I get close to it or when I am walking out of the building, etc.

I have a print copy of the factory service manual and the haynes, neither are perfect but the factory manual tends to have better pictures imo.

Here is a vacuum and an electrical for an ‘89. I assume yours is laid out the same way.

Sadly no. ‘89 is after some major interior revisions and a mild mid-cycle facelift. Finding good info for pre-facelifts is far, far more difficult.

That’d be great, especially if his is a pre-facelift (pre-’81) since the electricals and such all got an update after that.

Does the factory service manual detail how to get the door cards off? The lock on the passenger side is inop and the window gets stuck halfway down and I get the sneaking suspicion the two things are related.

I’m sure it does but I’ve removed the cards before so I know what to do. First remove the 5 or so screws at the bottom of the arm rest (4 on the bottom and one above the pocket) and then there’s one behind the little chrome which is a complete PITA to pop off. After you get that out you should then be able to then pull the arm rest up and out. (it might require some wiggling since the leather isn’t always cut perfectly around the holes)  the panel itself is just held in with plastic clips that you should be able to pop out easily some might break since they are 40 years old.

Have you discovered Kirby Palm’s service manual? It’s a free 600 page pdf that’s a compilation of tips, tricks, procedures, and anything you could possibly need to know about the XJ-S. Download it here: http ://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/Jaguar.html

Yeah, it’s great for knowing “oh that’s what’s wrong” but absolute garbage for knowing how to actually remove the part in question. As near as I can tell my failure in the system right now is likely the microswitches misaligned in the fan speed selector knob but I’ll be damned if I can find *anything* that tells me how to remove that part.
