20 years on, it’s having more trouble with itself than with the country, IMO.

I recall something at the time about China discussing Hong Kong staying under British rule for years prior to the hand over.

The British government weren’t happy with the terms of China’s suggestions and got pushed back.

Shame really. We used to go to Hong Kong when my dad was in the RAF and later when he worked for BAE and we lived in Saudi Arabia.

All I can be sure of is that whatever took place behind those closed doors was very, very nasty—“diplomacy” was not really a thing in post-Cultural Revolution China.

Britain had very little leverage. Treaty-wise, they only had claims to Hong Kong Island after 1997, which would be ridiculous to keep as the island has very little actual trade infrastructure to sustain economic independence.
