Need to buy an inexpensive commuter that still seats 4 occasionally. Under 10k. Are there any known issues with these cars like the Ford Focus transmissions, etc?

Jungle Pam for your time.

Cruze and Sonic turbo failures if correct oil changes and oil grade aren’t observed. The coking of the oil plugs the feed pipe and burns up the turbo. GM changed the Dexos1 oil from a high quality blend to full snythetic finally. Its made for GM by Mobil so its close to being the same as Mobil 1 . These need a high quality oil to avoid problems. Timing chain wear is prevalent in some years but the change in the oil should help with that. The diesel Cruze gets great mileage but you might research any problems. We only see a few at work and infrequently. Occasional thermostat issues and valve covers on some engines that have pcv passage or sealing issues.

I ran away screaming from my Sonic when the warranty was up. I had issues with the water pump/cooling system and 3 different dealers refused to fix it. I even had a letter from GM about there being issues, but no one would believe me and replace it. That was a 2012 model.

I haven’t been around them or heard anything since, so if that’s fixed they should be decent. It had plenty of room for 4 adults, sometimes even 5 for short distances. Got great gas mileage too!

Regardless of the answer to your question, nobody tell her she left her high beams on.

Extremely helpful! What is the oil change interval anyway? I’ve had older cars that stick to 3k/4k.

I would see 40 on the interstate pretty easy. I never really paid attention to city mileage.

Wife leans toward American brands. I know that everything is made everywhere now, but...

2011 Cruze eco(1.4t/6MT)

Before purchase CPO:

Water pump and valve cover assorted other minor things

Covered by CPO: cracked valve cover

After warranty: slave/throw out failure (clutch job), wiper Linkage broke.

That was all 32-80k miles.

I wouldn’t recommend one. 45mpg hwy was nice, but always something over the horizon it seemed.

I had to google her, and looks like she kept them on permanently back then

Ours has been great - we had the PCV/valavecover issue but it was replaced under warranty. The turbo got replaced early on before we bought it. It’s a 2013 LTZ w/62k, CPO. We’ve put 16k on it with no other issues. Auto is fine since it’s a real auto box, not a DCT like the Focus. Averaging ~31.5mpg. Was $12.5k, so you can get nice ones cheap. I’d go LT RS if you can find one in that ramge. You get rear discs + watts rear suspension from the LTZ. Makes a difference. It may be LT2, can’t remember...

All the newer GM vehicles have an Oil Life Monitor system but I like using the rule of thumb for these cars of about 6k . The monitor usually extends the changes to between 7500 and 8500 miles depending on driving habits. With the Dexos oil going to full synthetic now I’d say you’d probably be safe on going past that but I don’t like to gamble. GM now gives some free changes with a new car purchase and powertrain warranty has gone longer but bumper to bumper coverage isn’t as long as GM had in the past. I’m partial to the Cruze when it comes to your choices.

Dont have anything against that ... but if I am in the market for a gas 4 dr 4 cylinder sedan those would be my only choice.

I feel like someone here had a Turbo Sonic for while. Crazed Kanuck, Jayhawke I think had them.

You’d be better off with a 200c

Kudos to you if you’ve had good luck with Chrysler products, but I have not. I won’t be headed down that road again soon.
