This isn’t gonna be great for what firms remain in the US and use those inputs, or for anyone who buys those products. Mark my words: Stuff like this will encourage MORE outsourcing of production.

The tariff is for aluminium. As American industry uses aluminum, the tarrif won’t affect anyone.

Why not incentivize companies to stay/come here rather than punishing them from leaving??? Capital flight is pretty much entirely for the situation that Venezuela is in right now, and if it starts happening here, we gotta gtfo while we can.

In what ways will this cause more outsourcing? Does the US not make these sort things? Lol they probably do but are not as good and more expensive :]

You mean something that Trump promises is going to save our country will actually hurt us deeply and deteriorate our foreign relations because he has no idea what he’s doing and doesn’t give a damn about consequences?

Color me shocked.

This is getting really close to me doing work on oppo, and I know you’re joking, but I gotta rant for a sec:

When a final good, or something which is near-final production can enter a market without cost, while the raw materials which go into making that thing are taxed/dutied, you are begging producers to consider moving production somewhere else and just bring in final goods rather than the inputs. I’ll leave it to y’all to consider where the good, high-value jobs are in the production process...

It’s a “fancified” 110, but there’s lots of other cool LRs out there which look nicer.

makes sense. The cheeto is a business man, either he is that f-ing clueless or knows something we all don’t. Either way, I think we will lose :(

I’m of two minds on his business thinking re: trade. On one hand, he did genuinely do a lot of business in a non-tradeable industry. (It’s kinda hard to export/import towers and casinos.) But, he should also know the costs of tariffs (not like he’s never tried to build a building during a period of steel tariffs in the US) when they are imposed on inputs which companies in the US use to make other things.

In honesty, some of the most compelling research I’ve seen on how folks think about trade suggests that folks don’t “think” about trade, they mostly just “feel” about it. And when they “feel” about it, their feelings reflect their general view of the world beyond the nation’s borders.

*giant shrugging sound*

“Yeah, but just this morning somebody told me that the coal trucks are already rolling in the next county over.” His base will never see it coming.

And isn’t it great that if it all goes according to Bannon’s grand scheme, even more of their sons and daughters will have the chance to see overseas countries and return in a tin box. Just like pee-paw did in Korea. And as an added bonus, they won’t have to worry about that n****** commies’ health insurance anymore. What a time to be alive!

The thought process is that manufacturing of things like steel and semiconductors and Iphones is sent to other countries because it’s cheaper. Using steel as an example, Chinese steel manufacturers don’t need to comply with safety and pollution regulations like US steel manufacturers do. As a result, they can make steel a lot cheaper. Companies in the US that use steel are cheap, and DGAF where it comes from, so they use Chinese steel since it is in fact the cheapest.

Putting a tariff on imported steel will raise the price on it to the point that it is now cheaper to use US steel that does not have a tariff. As a result, companies in the US will choose to use US steel instead of Chinese steel.

Since US steel is now in high demand, steel plants will restart and hire bazillions of unemployed Americans, and America will then become great again.

That’s the theory from my understanding anyways.
