According to Japans Mag-X , Lexus is about to debut a 3 row RX by October in Toyko. It would make sense, the RX is hot, probably the best selling crossover in the US . Through May, they’ve already sold 38, 429. And apparently dealers have been asking for a more family friendly RX.  Lexus rep Jeff Bracken told Automotive News last March that “They would just love to have it now. “But I think they’re quite relieved that they know it’s coming.” So there you have it. The crossover onslaught continues because this is what people want sadly.

Mmmm.... no leg room, my favorite. People clamor for that third row they never use

and would never want to use, because it’s a tiny penalty box that sits right on top of the rear axle.

Its pretty much going to be like the Tiguan: a 3rd row for the sake of having a 3rd row. It’ll only be usable for the kids, and even then wont be used as much. Its cheaper than developing a dedicated 3 row SUV, but it doesnt make sense packaging wise. Nothing smaller than full size should seat 7.

Although the RX is bigger than the 3-row Tiguan, I believe - it’s actually slightly longer than the related Highlander, which has had 3 rows all along.

Still, third-rows in even midsize SUVs are pretty useless.

3 row in midzise is pointless. Case in point: the RX is 1.5 inches longer than a Highlander.

I always thought it was strange it wasn’t three row given that its just a highlander. But then again this is the company that thought a 5 seat venza was a solid idea.

it doesn’t make sense until you have 2-3 kids and need to carpool. You don’t need a 3rd row full time, but 1-2 times a week you need to put a few more kids in there for 20-30 minutes at a time. Makes all the difference in the world to have a tiny 3rd row if it means it buys you 1-2 days a week you don’t have to drive kids around.

Its all lies. Especially considering that they said they are going to keep the RX design intact so it can be distinctly RX.

True. But what about those adult only night outs? Like someone else said, a midsize SUV has no business having 3 rows. Yea it helps to have that extra space during the week, but as time goes on and those kids grow up, you have seats that not even the smallest adults can fit in. If you can spend the money on an RX, just go ahead and head over to Toyota and get a Sequoia.

well I can say one thing: a 7 seat RX is going to carry 7 people better than a 5 seat one. If you need those seats only occasionally, it doesn’t make sense to drive with the compromises of a much larger vehicle. Think of it like a Mustang; We all know those back seats are useless, but you wouldn’t ask them to take them out at the dealer (unless its a track day special of course). Its a value add with little penalty.
