I am so excited for this project. It drove better than expected on the 35 minutes home. Steering is out of alignment, electrical like power windows and power seats need help. Bouncy suspension. Surprisingly strong brakes. Oh, that V8 is wonderful.

I love how stock it is, down to the AM radio.

We are going to have so much fun with this. My son is at Berklee College of Music in Boston at songwriting camp, but when he gets home we need to start cataloguing needs.

Advice needed: For the surface rust, should ee grind it clean and hit it with primer to retard its progress until we have time/money for body and paint? He doesn’t want primer patches, but the clear coat is peeling and the paint is fucked. I don’t think some primer spots hurt, and I know from experience that driving around in a partially finished car is a great motivator to save money.

Post pics of the rust if you can. If it’s not that serious it might not be a big deal to let it be.

Hey, you’re an attorney, right? I have a question for you. How do you handle it when you’ve taken a case you definitely know will not end well for your client? I mean, you’re headed for a blowout and you know there’s not much you can do to stop it. What do you tell them?

If it’s just light surface oxidation and isn’t rapidly thinning the metal just leave it until you’re ready for the full resto. Just keep an eye on it and watch for progression.

If you need to fix it use an epoxy primer. (Two part, not a regular rattle can. It needs an activator) It’s one of the best ways to prevent future rust. Plus it stands up to UV rays and water. A primer surfacer won’t hold up to the elements.

Also make sure you’ve gotten rid of every spec of rust. The tiniest spot can grow and spread underneath the primer.

Would love to be able to find a survivor like that. But they just don’t exist here.

For the rust I would grind it clean and use something like this eastwood rust encapsulator since regular primers can still allow moisture under them

http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-rust-encapsulator-aerosol-red-15-oz.html?SRCCODE=PLA00010&product_id=%7Bproduct_id%7D&adpos=1o1&creative=179111081669&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKEAjwytLKBRCX547gve7EsE4SJAD3IZV6Bbg70xG_x9k5L7wThbrpSZW-MM9muhfqhNJwYLAmIRoCWIzw_wcB

but since you live in a dryer climate the rust shouldn’t be a huge issue where it needs to be done immediately.

Awesome!

Primer doesn’t seal the metal, so if the primer gets wet, the metal starts rusting underneath it. If you do sand and spot prime, cover the primer with some sort of paint. Even if you just fog over it with a rattle can.

I think you’re on the right track with grind the rust & prime. All kids want a cool car. He’ll value it more with some sweat equity to make it cool. Do the work, save the money, have the respray done then. Drive it while it’s in progress. It’ll be worth it.

If that’s original paint, then I wouldn’t do anything. Plus, once you start digging in, you’re eventually going to want to fix every paint blemish, which means your son isn’t going to able to actually drive it for a while.

Completely unsolicited thought incoming:

I’m sure he’ll want to get a different stereo in there. Try to convince him to go with a hidden head unit design so the dash can stay intact. With a Bluetooth compatible unit it’s not a big deal to have it under the seat or in the glovebox.

In terms of the chrome it depends on how bad it is. Patience and very fine steel wool can work wonders on small issues. If the chrome is flaking replating or replacing the trim is the only real option.

What’s the word? Thunderbird! Well, at least according to ZZ Top. I’d sand off the rust and then hit it with paint since spray primer doesn’t seal it against moisture.

Primer is in itself porous. Top coat it with paint after priming if you decide to go that route as a temp fix until the time comes to do it right.

token got it. Primer will not protect from moisture, you need to hit it with some paint.

That said, if you’re ok with an ok paint job on the cheap for now, hit up Automotive Touchup and get some factory correct paint and clear. It’s an easy job, it won’t look great, but it’ll be an inexpensive way to protect the car, won’t look like primer spots, and give you something to do.

Another idea for the stereo is the route I went with my El Camino which was to get a bluetooth amp and some 6x9's in boxes. Run power to the amp, hook up the speakers, sync your phone and you are all set. Took me about an hour to do everything.
