Although I’ll probably end up getting an SV650, I found a BMW that gets me quite excited. If I had the money, this is what I’d be riding:

Or maybe a GB500 if the price is right (why, oh why, didn’t I buy one of these in the ‘90s when the dealers couldn’t give them away???)

Despite them not being the most comfortable rides, I do love me some café racer...

Is this your first bike? Would you like to know why a café racer makes a terrible first bike?

He should get a CB instead.

No, I’ve had several bikes in the past, from UJMs to semi-sportbikes. I am well aware of the downsides to café racers, but damn, I love the look. That’s why I’ll get an SV650 or R1200RT instead. I’m too old to be that uncomfortable.

But if I could afford to buy a bike just to look at, say parked in the living room, it would be a café racer.

Everyone needs more CB in their life.

Well, a few people don’t, since they stopped returning my calls.

I was making a joke about an old post of Peter Black’s, but yeah, seems like an uncomfortable bike. Although they are quite pretty.

As cool as it would be, unless it was a mechanically broken bike, it’d be a real shame to leave it parked.

New ‘cafe style’ bikes like Triumph Thruxtons and Moto Guzzu V7s and Ducati Scramblers have 90% of the look without most of the compromises of old Cafes.

I remember that article and thought you might have been the author (I’m too lazy to look it up).

Well, if I did have one of those that I mentioned earlier, I would take it out on occasion, but I couldn’t see any long distance rides in its future. A few hours max, I’d guess, since that’s probably all that I could handle.

What I dont get about that BMW is this: why does the standard R9t have upside down forks, but the ‘sports’ cafe racer doesn’t?

cost of ownership for BMW’s can be stupid. I won’t do it again...probably.

I’ve had plenty of German cars, but always Japanese motorcycles. Now I drive a Japanese car and want a German motorcyle (but will probably buy Japanese again).

I don’t have any clue how reliable German bikes are, but I figured that if they’re anything like the cars I’d be in trouble. A friend bought an R65LS, and that was a pretty solid and reliable ride, and then decided to upgrade to an R1100RT. He asked some questions of the owner, specifically about engine and gearbox oil changes, and when the owner was unaware that they didn’t share the same lubricant he should have turned and walked away. It was relatively cheap because of the high miles, as is typical for BMW sport tourers, but he shouldn’t have given in to the impulse. Sure enough the transmission failed shortly thereafter, and sinking a ton of money into it really didn’t have the desired result. He should have spent the money on a properly maintained bike instead and saved himself a lot of headache.

He ended up parting it out and making most of his money back, and then bought a decent, properly maintained, R1200RT. It’s a recurring pattern with him, but I think he’s finally figured it out. I haven’t seen him in years, but I know he now has a Vanagon Westfalia and an E39 M5, manual of course, and I am unbelievably jealous. He was a big Mopar fan until I turned him into a BMW and Vanagon fanatic. He still kicks himself for buying a new Chrysler LeBaron and having it shipped from the US when he was based in Germany during his time in the army. He could have been driving cheap BMWs on the autobahn, but at the time believed that Chrysler products were the best things on the planet. Live and learn...

I didn’t even notice that - good catch! I’m guessing that it’s not really about being sporty, but just looking sporty...
