If you wander around shows and peer at makers’ data plates you can learn unexpected things.
Take for example this John Deere tractor. The Deere company are based in the American midwest so it must be made there, right?
Nein. The engine on the other hand is from France.
Or we could take this Case IH tractor. Case and International are American companies too, except they’re not anymore because they’re the C part of CNH. CNH were Fiat until they were hived off and are now headquartered, for tax reasons, in the Netherlands. Still run by Sergio though. So the tractor I saw was made maybe in America, or Italy, or the Netherlands? Nein, but with a different accent.
Let’s move on to this New Holland. Painted in what used to be Ford blue until Ford bought NH and then decided to unload all of their agri division, the blue and the NH name to Fiat who then shifted them on to become the NH in CNH. So this New Holland was made in America, or maybe Italy or the Netherlands or Austria?
Nope.
Made in the old Ford plant in Basildon which back in the day used to make radiators for much of the Ford empire.
Lastly, let’s have a Terex loader. Terex are based in Connecticut so naturally this machine came from nowhere near there.

The Civic Si that I test drove the other day had an engine from either the US or Japan, a transmission from India and final assembly in Canada.

most of the smaller Ford and New Holland tractors (like mine) are made in Japan by Shibaura.

And just to further confuse things some of the newest ones are exported from the UK to North America.

Although that’s actually normal for Civic hatches to come from the UK, here, because they’re such low demand products.
