It is definitely true that liberals failed to present a strategic campaign and anything resembling a likable candidate, but eventually, eyes will need to turn to the other enablers of this mess: the mainstream media, non-batshit conservatives, and bitter voters. The media made a lot of this by throwing Trumputinbannon softballs and failing to call him out on his endless lies and cons. Non-batshit conservatives who don’t actually respect his bullshit are complicit in the mess. And easily hurt snowflakes (people who claim to be about “personal responsibility” but often shy from it, themselves) who voted to cut off their nose to spite their face, those who in the long run could lose the most because of these dolts, deserve special attention.

While I agree with this statement entirely, I would ask whether your opening clause amounts to a softball. I see all of this for what it is: an overt attempt to destroy government and civility as we know it by an unhinged bully and his handlers. I am reminded of the saying about the Nazi holocaust where the people don’t say anything while their neighbors are disappeared one by one and when it’s their turn, there’s nobody left to say anything. Though it looks like the more mainstream Republicans may be finally finding some voice and when they do, Mr. Trump will take credit for toughening them up.

I’m not sure it is a softball, how so? What more could have been done aside from better strategy? They are elitists, so that angle will always be there. Maybe go after Bannon even more than Orange, the former is the real danger, as he pulls strings. The key now is to focus on 2018 and 2020, and hope there’s no war or other real drama between now and then.
Mainstream Rs lost a lot of cred over the past 10-15 years, we will see if they can redeem themselves.
