Kinja'd!!!

Oh.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh that doesn’t look good. So after the random shaking when driving, no flat tires (but they are from 2002), and the rampant rust, I think my mum should start looking for new cars. Any small SUV suggestions? She likes the Kia Soul at the moment.

Do you really need to guess my suggestion?

The Soul looks cool. See how she likes the CX-3. Either choice should be built well and be a good value.

CX-3 may be too small, and there’s of course the fear of rust. Mazda’s reputation with the matter doesn’t give her much confidence. I’ll bring it up to her anyway.

We bought a CX5 last year. No complaints. It’s zippy when it needs to be and has pretty decent interior room.

Someone may correct me, but I think that rep is a thing of the past. Still, worth it to make sure.

The Trax might also be a decent choice. I like where most of Chevy’s current line up is going.

Any issues with rust on it? As you can tell, we’d like something that can avoid it.

Trax is probably too small. She needs enough room for a dog crate in the back.

Well no. But my area isn’t prone to rusting issues on cars. Pac NW.

My sister had two different Kia Souls. She totaled both of them and walked away with some minor bruising. Both were freak accidents, one including hitting a stationary object at about 45-50 mph.

Only reason she didn’t buy another one is she thought perhaps there was a higher power telling her perhaps she shouldn’t be driving this car. She liked it well enough though. It got fairly okay mileage and they can carry a boatload of stuff. Plus they’ve got very good ingress/egress.

CX-5 then? The Soul may be too small as well. Of course, that’s up to her to decide.

Yup, I can get behind that. Especially dealing with Toronto drivers. Thanks for your input!

We’ll probably go take a look at one. I’ll peek under some used ones parked outside.

Honda elements are very solid choices too. Kia souls are the segment leader though. They’re probably the leader for a reason.

Get the Kia Soul. Comes in huge variety of colors and configs with designer packages. Easy to get in and out of. Has more cargo capacity than midsize crossovers but with better handling, better fuel economy, and less wear and tear on consumables, and super cheap maintenance.

Can get for invoice price because Kia and superb warranty.

I don’t know if an Element is the best idea. She’d prefer something with a warranty.

I’m surprised at how many people are vouching for the Soul. Definitely staying at the top of the list for now.

A good son would encourage her to get a soul. A good enthusiast would pressure her into getting a Focus ST.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I too can vouch for the Soul. My parent’s just got my brother one. It’s not a bad little car. It’s definitely not a lot of fun but it isn’t boring either. It’s an interesting car. It has enough power to get out of its own way and is really practical. They look small but have a surprising amount of room inside. Dealers seem desperate to get rid of them as well so you may get a great deal.

We’ve thought and talked about it. It’s a 14 year old car worth maybe $3k CAD if we’re optimistic. For new tires, it would be anywhere between $600-$800 (plus new winters), new shocks for the front, and checking to see what the steering would need, plus labour. So, cost-wise, to sink in another let’s say $1500 into a $3k car that has plenty of rust elsewhere, it might make sense to bite the bullet on a new or CPO car before the next big thing goes.

Trust me, I love this car when things things are going right. But it might be time to put it out to pasture.
