So a few friends and I are planning on doing the Gambler 500 in Oregon in a few weekends and of course we still haven’t gotten our shit together on a car quite yet(If anyone is wondering what the Gambler 500 is, watch the video at the bottom).
Our current frontrunner is this:

Apologies we’re looking at one of your favorites for an event that’s so rough on vehicles, but if we end up landing it(sounds like we aren’t the only interested party) what would you do if you had two weeks to prep a questionable Tercel for a 500 mile off-road rally/what would you check as definite red flags? We’re balling on a $500 budget so we’ll overlook a lot of faults, but are there any common issues that would be too much to fix in two weeks and make it not-fit for this sort of abuse?
Also, if anyone has a line on a good Gambler candidate in the Portland area(would potentially make a longer trip to Seattle or Bend for the right car) send it my way! We are especially interested in oddballs such as the Tercel and V8/RWD land yachts but open to pretty much any suggestions.

Me and some friends have an MR2, but it’s lacking an engine and transmission at the moment. Eventually it’s going to be our crapcan/Lemons car, once we can source a cheap enough drivetrain for it.

The problem we have is we pretty much need something that runs/drives/stops now because the event is in two weeks and we aren’t Roadkill. We can fix up little things before the rally but we have to know that we’re pretty much good to go.

That one isn’t too far off from that haha. One of the guys I’m doing it with is going to Oregon State and is renting a house down in Corvallis. In Oregon if you aren’t in the Portland Metro Area you don’t need to pass any kind of inspection or emissions to put something on the road so if we register it to his house down there we’re golden.

The Van looks awesome, definitely thinking about it. Olds would be awesome but definitely way too much work for two weeks. I would take the Tercel over the Benz I think and the Camaro over all three if he gets back to us

That Camaro would be great, Get some used off-road tires and put some KC Highlights on the Roof, it would also really benefit from some tasteful hand painted “Camero” branding on the Rockers 70s Z28 Style.

Agreed. If either of the bolt patterns match up right we’re also considering just borrowing the 31s with good A/T tires from either my 2nd-gen 4Runner or my buddy’s S10 Blazer and cutting till they fit

This is our first year, we just got the car and plan to source a drivetrain over the summer. It’s really the only thing we need to budget for as the rest of the car is in decent enough condition. Not sure what we are going to go with for power.

If we really like the car and it’s old enough to not need odo disclosures(makes it much more of a process) we’ll go through the bullshit to get it re-titled but we prefer to avoid it.
Does not need to be able to pass emissions because we can register it at a house in Corvallis.

There’s a ton of stuff in Oregon, especially if we don’t insist on getting something interesting.
I’m surprised though, I feel like Atlanta would have a similar market to Oregon thanks to not salting the roads(I would assume?) resulting in a glut of crappy old cars that no one wants but are still in one piece
