A North Carolina woman who is 5 months pregnant came upon a man who she said was trying to steal her purse from her SUV. When the man tried to run away, she hopped in her vehicle and ran him down. The incident was caught on camera by a local news crew filming an unrelated story. The alleged thief received minor injuries and was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and damage to property. Police also charged the woman with assault.

In North Carolina? Your guess is as good as mine. But I do think there might be some consideration for the severity of the crime he was committing. Her life was not in imminent danger; the guy was running away.

While running away? yes.
Unless you can convince the court the person posed imminent bodily threat to you or someone else, that’s attempted manslaughter/manslaughter.

If she had shot him she may have faced attempted murder/man slaughter. Only cops get away with shooting unarmed people running away.

That was in no way ‘stand your ground.’ That involves threat of bodily harm.
She is likely to see a stiffer penalty than the burglar. Human life gets valued much higher than property in the court system.

Interestingly enough this brings forth a moral dilemma. Is inanimate property potentially worth more than human life? Should regular citizens perform actions usually reserved for trained officers of the law? The answer to that depends on who you are, of course. :)
I’m just glad guns weren’t involved and that there weren’t many people near her path. Too many nightmare stories of someone trying to shoot a parking lot thief only to completely miss and hit/kill an innocent person.

I feel if you are willing to do the crime, then you are aware that their are consequences to your actions that could include being shot by police or run down by the angry person you stole from. I think what she did was a bit disproportionate to the actual crime but I also think that any reasonable person would have done the exact same thing in her situation.

Fair enough. If you do the crime, one shouldn’t be surprised when retaliated against.
I wouldn’t have done what she did though, the damage such would cause to my car would be worth more than what he would have gotten in the purse lol. Whenever I leave my purse in my car my wallet and my phone’s with me, so he’d only make off with a purse full of lipstick, eyeliner, and maybe a hair brush. xD
And worse case, so long as I have my phone or access to any phone, I can lock my debit card in as fast as a minute and again, thief would be left empty. Sucks being a woman in a dangerous community so one has to protect herself.

“Stand your ground” is also easier to apply when your assailant isn’t running away. At that point, it’s no longer standing your ground, it’s chasing/pursuing.
Even with a gun shot, “stand your ground” doesn’t really apply when the entry wound is in the back and the exit wound is in the chest.
All that being said, if my wife were five months pregnant and ran down someone who tried to rob her... “atta girl” would probably be my first thought, followed by “hope the alignment is OK”.
