The Jaaaaaaaaaag has OEM mag wheels though and also a license plate, so I will never have to renew my registration, I have no mileage limits, and my property tax is $22 a year in perpetuity.

Kinja'd!!!

So much better.

Amazing the engineering in this in the name of handling and low unsprung weight. For a 4000 lb boat of a vehicle this thing’s handling is stupendous.

Cruised with this guy through Wichita. As we passed a gas station a man yelled out “YO NICE JAG”. XJS: 1, C2, 0.

The holes in the floor would explain the road noise at speed. This is pretty common (non structural) rust due to the insane amount of noise-damping material being a sponge and the smallest amount of moisture results in the metal just constantly getting saturated. Still, it’s just a floor pan. Easy fix.

Kinja'd!!!

I am, however, confused at this plywood sticking out underneath the seat. The seats also feel like a bare frame with no foam and just some leather draped over them. I’ll investigate that another time.

Kinja'd!!!

Antique plates look so nice.

The fan needs to have a clutch, and that air filter has to go but the tee for the dual upper radiator hoses interferes with any “standard sized” air cleaners.

Got the carb tuned and the timing set to stock early-80s Chevy spec. The carb is an Edelbrock 1806 with Edelbrock Performer intake manifold all on an early-80s Chevy truck motor with an ‘RV’ cam ( very mild). On the plus side the car no longer smells horrid at low loads.

Highway gearing is utterly horrible

Kinja'd!!!

Um, what? This was in the back seat with a bunch of wiring running forward. My theory is this had a Holley EFI setup that was hurridly removed with the Edelbrock unceremoniously slapped in place to sell the car, which is why it’s so ill-tuned.

Kinja'd!!!

...this further supports my theory.

That is an awesome car.

Please remove the wing at once.

Not sure if I can remove the wing without a lot of body work.

I’m getting tetanus just looking at your floor pan.

Much better with the stock wheels. Seconded on removing the wing, if feasible. LOL at the plywood. Looks like someone was trying to shore up a collapsed seat bottom.

Weak. That’s mild rust if even that.

Such an awesome car.

Is this an auto? If so, are you considering a swap? Easier or harder than the fox?

I’m sure the rubber that holds the seat up has torn. Will probably take it apart and weave paracord to make a new seat support and lay some new upholstery foam over that.

As for the wing, I’d like to find a local body shop to sponsor this thing and paint it and slap their logo on a windshield banner but that’s mostly me spitballing and begging for handouts isn’t my thing. The car begs to be BRG, though...

It’s auto. A manual swap in this would be $2000+, a majority of which would be the transmission that can handle this much torque and weight. Not currently in the plans.

It’s a Jagrolet! Didn’t know that, killer. A roommate of mine built an ‘86 with an LT1, that car was a riot. Love these stock wheels.

Well, it might be for the better, you’ll need that extra hand for giving high fives about how damn cool the car is.

I wonder if you could find an old XJS seat in a yard and install it? There are a few on eBay, but they can be a little pricey.

The car does need to be BRG to go with that interior. Certainly it would be worth a Maaco single stage job. Too bad you’re broke.

Even Maaco is $$$$$$ these days. Unfortunately I can’t find any XJSes in local yards :( A parts car comes up on CL every now and then but they’re usually trashed.

The auto is far more “Grand tourey” and I have full control of the gears with the D-2-1 selector and it shifts IMMEDIATELY up or down if I use those, honestly quicker than I ever could manually. Not quite a DCT but pretty damn close.

The k&N catalog will have a huge number of air cleaner assemblies that will fit that carb. Look in the universal section and they’ll have something that will fit within that space.

You mentioned the car was originally yellow. Some disgusting hue or something like Mimosa? That wouldn’t look bad at all.

British Racing Green in a British car which was not that colour... is like Alfa Romeo/Ferrari “resale red”.

And I should know because I did it once, with a 70s Mini. In my defence: car was originally red and I already had another red Mini. It looks lovely in BRG but still annoys me though.

Of course, the most important question by far is... do you think it looks bad?

With colours it is difficult to know until you see them in the metal and with lots of natural light but I quite like it. It’s certainly “period”.

Not a fan of yellows in general, honestly. Something like this would be my ultimate goal were I to do paint and bodywork.

If you go that route may I suggest something darker: Connaught Green. It’s still considered BRG, by the way.

I have noticed the engine bay is black (I wonder if that is the way it is supposed to be?). How about the rest of the inside panels - the boot (er, trunk), for example?

I quite like your car (forgot to say that!). In fact I think US version headlights with quad-lamps look almost better than the original Jaguar ones.

Do you ever plan to put a Jaguar engine in there, even if it is not the V12?

Kinja'd!!! "Jake - Has Bad Luck So You Don't Have To" (murdersofa)
06/29/2017 at 15:15, STARS: 0

Mmm. That Connaught is a good color. All the other inside panels are all red.

No plans for an engine swap. I’d like to squeeze 400hp out of this 350 and put in a 4-speed lock-up transmission and quieter exhaust.

06/29/2017 at 15:23, STARS: 1

Connaught Green is very classy, I like it a lot.

Well, if there are no yellow patches anywhere it seems they put some decent effort into it. Patchwork-painted cars are depressing

Sounds like a good idea. The important thing is that the car is alive, it will survive and you can enjoy it. As long as it is drivable and gradually improving there is always time for the rest.

Congratulations!

Tuned up the carb the other day but now I’m chasing a vacuum leak of some kind. The annoying thing is it’s an intermittent leak which is super frustrating.
